the Filipinos In Which We Lost Four Killed and Twelve Wounded Manila July expedition com prising troops of San Pedro Pa sib and Morong under Brigadier Gen era n H Hall yesterday captured Cal amba an important trading town on the south shore of Lagunda de Bay There was two hours sharp fighting during which four soldiers were killed and twelve wounded The trenches surrounding the harbor were under water but the swampiness of the land made the work harder The troops boarded Tuesday night The force comprised 400 of the Washington volunteers 150 of the in 150 of the Fourth and two guns of the First artillery These and the gunboats and Costo assembled opposite Calamba day afternoon Crowds of people in carts and on foot were seen rushing to the hills Natives escaping from Cal amba in canoes choice of joining the army or becoming servants to Filipinos and chose the army in tending to surrender at the first oppor Most of the civilians reached the American lines during the fight ing but the insurgents took others away with them in their retreat General Hall captured twelve Fili pinos with guns Major General Law ton Professor Worcester of the Amer ican Philippine commission Mrs Gen eral Lawten and General Lawtons son accompanied the expedition on board a launch and sat cooly in an unpro boat close to the shore during the fighting the bullets splashing about them Today General Hall brought to Ma nila the Spaniards whom the tion had released from captivity of more than a year Lieutenant commanding the today found a long missing Spanish gunboat which had been cov with bushes and fish nets so as not to resemble a vessel Ihe Fili pinos having met reinforcements and thinking that the Americans had evac the town descended from the hills intending to reoccupy Calamba General Hall noon today two men were fatally and UYe were so burned They arc Morris Slough of aged 24 married frightfully burned about the body and also internally He cannot recover Charles Eiserman of aged 26 married burned about head and body Recovery doubtful Adam Gernhart of aged 2S married externally and internally burned condition favorable The other four John Lozar Rocco Dincin Carl Rossi and Stephen Mar tini while badly burned will all re cover The cause of the explosion is un known Three mules were burned to death in the passageway where the ex plosion occurred and others were over come by The force of the ex shook the entire workings and for a time it was feared there had been terrible loss of life How the Kansas Volunteers Treated One of Their Number Who Deserted Kansas City Mo July tragic scene which attended the death of Corporal Leonard F Hayes Ameri cas only traitor iu the Philippines was witnessed by Sergeant George A 1a marsh of Company H Twentieth Kan sas volunteers now in this city Corporal Hayes he says became en of a Filipino beauty and de serting his comrades was placed in charge of a Filipino battery with the rank of lieutenant He met his death in almost the first engagement in which he fought against his country Speaking of this battle Sergeant Lamarsh said We had charged the Filipinos driving them back and kill ing and wounding many Among the wounded left on the field we found Hayes He was recognized by several of the boys One of the soldiers of the Second Oregon drove his bayonet through the body of the wounded traitor and lifted him above his head and held him there while the soldiers shot him The body was thrown into a trench and buried with several dead Filipinos We have treated him worse if we had known how Hayes was a corporal in Company I on the Hig Consolidated street railway lines by a commute cf that body was defeated When the previous strike was a month ago and agreement between the company and the strikers was brought about a the new mcs by the old men who were taken back the present strike was rated it was charged that the agree ment had been violated by the com pany and on the other band the com pany charged that the men and sending for books and papers to tain whether tho agreement bad been lived up to and to inform the public where the blame for the strike lay Mayor Farley opposed the proposed action in a vigorous speech in which he declared that the appointment of the special committee would interfere with the plans of the executive for the crushing out of disorder He said the only result could be to keep alive the agitation and that no good purpose would be served In time of peace he declared prepare for war but when you have war the best thing to do is to bring about peace but that cant he done by keeping up the agita tion which caused the war This seems to he a good time for everybody to mind his own business Several of the councilmen favored the of the committee but when the resolution came to a vote it was lost Many of the strike sympathizers have been very bitter toward Mayor Farley In public meetings fney have charged him with responsibility for the pres ent troubles and threats upon the rioters and up to 10 oclock tonight there had not been a single outbreak of violence cars were operated on nearly all lines on nearly the usual schedules but ii some parts of the city they ran almost empty the boycott of the lines by the working people being almost universal President Everett says however he does not believe the boycott is effective He thinks people are determined from
