June third day of the convention hegan at half past ten when in response to the gavel rap the delegates arose for prayer The officiat ing minister was Dr John R Scott of Flu Chairman Thurston without any pre plunged into business by an nouncing that the first thing on the pro gram was the report of the committee on resolutions Joseph B Foraker of Ohio crowded to the front and climbed the steps to the stage while the crowds sent up a shrill yell READING TDK PLATFORM The audience and delegates followed the reading with intense interest The reference to the administration of Ben jamin Harrison evoked the first demon stration bnt louder still came the roar when words of the platform pledged the party again to the doctrine of protection in the of American labor and American industry The first sentence of the platform pledging the party to sound money started a great uproar among the dele gates on the floor but the galleries did not participate until unalterable opposi tion to the free coinage of silver was read Then the delegates led by Sen ator Lodge and Colonel W A Stone of Pennsylvania rose en masse Fans and hats waved wildly until the pit looked like a hurricane tossed sea mid the galleries roared their approval For two minutes the tumult continued Hawaii arid the Monroe doctrine were applauded but the enthusiasm over the Cuban plank waa a general disappoint ment A very interesting incident oc curred however in this connection As the plank was read Colonel Fred Grant who sat on the platform with the distin guests arose and wildly waved about hia head the flag of the Cuban revolutionists The invitation to the women of the country to help the Republican party to redeem it from Democracy and Populism was given a goodnatured cheer and the motion which Senator Foraker made to adopt the platform was also cheered A CRUCIAL MOMENT One of the crucial moments of the con was at band The chairman an that he would recognize to move a substitute for the majority re port the gentleman from Colorado Teller of Teller set the Westerners wild In little scattering squads the hand fuls of delegates who had been sitting under the banners of Colorado of Idaho of Utah of Nevada silver as equal standard money and pledges its power to the free unrestricted and independent coinage of gold and silver at United States mints at the ratio parts of silver to 1 of gold Senator Teller aa ho stood on the platform to make hia final protest to the Republican against the adoption of a gold standard policy wua a striking figure It waa not until toward the close of hie speech that ho one of the princi ple articles of its faith the senator paused and swept his eyes around the hall For nn instant the full significance of his defiance failed to impress itself then it sunk home and the galleries rose with another yell and mingling with the yell a fusilade of biases Another demonstration arose when Senator Teller folded his arms across the pink rosebud on hia coat and sank into his seat 1 he from Ohio the chair man of the resolutions committee then arose but not to reply to the speech of the Colorado senator Without a word he moved to lay the substitute offered by Mr Teller on the table Senator Lodge of Massachusetts from his place on the floor seconded the mo tion The motion which is not debate able had the effect of calling off further debate and Senator Teller demanded a roll call of states His demand was quickly supported by Senator Mantle on behalf of Montana and Delegate Cleve land of Nevada Chairman announcement ol the result 818J to 105J waa the signal of a groat demonstration for the victor ous gold men VICTORY KOR SOUND MONEY Senator Foraker then demanded the previous question and the roll on the financial plank was called Upon the motion the vote speaker on the platform and in an instant bedlam reigned Senator Cannon unflinchingly faced the irate audience His face was pale but on it was a look of grave determina tion and he did not wince as he looked at those who all about him in the eyes Chairman Thuraton tried vainly to stay the torrent of disapproval and re store order At last when he could make himself heard he set the conven tion off by a ringing statement that the Republican party did not fear the declara tion that waa being read GREAT CHEERING The delegates except the bolting dele gations arose to their feet en masse and cheered from Twelve thousand throats set out their brazen ap plause cheer following cheer Arms frantically bats umbrellas all swayed and swirled like branches in a storm The roar grew deeper until it wtm an swept over them before the gale of emotion subsided to allow Mr Thura on to again proceed The chair suggests to this convention bat the Republican party in convention need not fear any declara tion For the first time since the con vening of the convention the rafters rang with an uninterrupted unrestricted un controllable round of applause Dele gates rose upon their chairs chiefs fana and hata were waved and it waa some minutes be fore the chairman could restore order sufficient to be hoard Having at length this he proceeded The chair further in the in of tho Republican party that whatever the great many of the people at the polla in Novem ber There intervened at the conclusion of thia speech another demonstration Dele gates alternates and spectators roee to their feet and waved in the air flags hats fans and and cheered until the sound became one solid deep throated roar When at length tho chair obtained the ear of the delegates he said Tho chair earnestly and re nska that this convention be in order Whereupon the speaker Mr Cannon enabled to continue as fol lows SENATOR CANNON This is signed by a committee on be half of the withdrawing delegates The names of the committee are Henry M Teller of Colorado the convention here interrupted the speaker and the air be came filled with the vibration of mingled with cheers from of Idaho more Frank J Cannon Utah a few more Charles A Hartman Montana half a dozen R F Pettigrew South Dakota a voice Good A C Cleveland Nevada A voice Good by Prolonged laughter all over the house mingled with a few cries of Democrat At the conclusion of hia address Mr Cannon shook hands with the chairman and with Governor r who appeared on tho platform As the retiring delegates went out down the aisle of the convention the whole assembly rose and Diluted them with a universal roar that shook the building and rent the air As they took up their march the band played The Red White and Blue the convention joining in the singing of the chorus and when the band had ceased playing the singers kept up the song Handkerchiefs hata flags were again waved by the people who mount ed seats tables and railings Chairman Thurston took out his handkerchief and waved it to and fro in front of him with an apparent look of thankfulness and satisfaction that the crisis was over Dur ing the tumult the standard of Colorado disappeared and although diligent in was made no one was able to as certain whether it had been removed by order of the convention authorities or had been surreptitiously taken by the retiring delegation ENOUGH LEFT TO DO BUSINESS Tho seems to be enough delegates left to do business This bit of sarcasm brought out a round of derisive applause from the floor and shouts from the gallery Lee Mantle of Montana Senator Brown of Urah and A F Burleigh of Washington remained in the conven tion Mantle said he would refer the platform to the of Montana for a decision The convention quieted down after this scene and the chairman called upon the secretary for the list of the national coin selected TUB NOMINATIONS The nest business ia the call of the roll of states and nominations for presi dent announced Mr at 2 oclock The roll was called names were un answered which had seldom been passed before in Republican conventions Illi and Indiana and the monotony was broken only when General Henderson rose at the call of Iowa to announce that Charles H Baldwin of Council Bluffs would speak for that State ALLLISON PRESENTED In a graceful and eloquent speech Mr Baldwin nominated Senator Allison for the times that a parade of 15000 follow soldiers and fellow citizens formed by prearrangement in front of the court house escorted by three com of militia under the command of Captain Harry with teveral hands and drum corps paraded up North Market street to Governor home on the hill The same click that notified Governor of his nom over the Associated Preps wire eot the fire alarm going A of Gov ernor and Mrs personal had their congratula tions before the parade the house They included Dr T H Phillipp Murat General Hastings of Rt Paul a fellow soldier comrade on President Hayes staff John Russell Young Dr of Columbus George B Freese Captain Samuel Saxton Julius Whiting and others The the parade to the McKiniey home was one of wildest enthusiasm Batteries of artillery started with the nom signal to fire 100 When the nominating speeches began the blare of trumpets was heard calling the militia and ethers to fall into line ready for the march Mayor Rice or dered tho police patrol to report eo as to avoid confusion as much as possible Before the parade had covered a half dozen blocks to the McKiniey home as if by the centre of the city and line of march waa a panorama of flagi and decorations of all Mr F E Case a lawyer and promi nent member of the citizens committee selected to deliver a congratulatory ad dresP in part us follow Major McKiniey your neighbors and townsmen wish to be first to late you upon your nomination to the highest office within tho gift of the people None know better than the neighbors hero well this honor is merited These were the first to the beginning of your public career They saw you quit your academic studies with the ardor of youth and bravery beyond your years to devoto your services to your country The courage and ability you then displayed p promise of what in later year won for you that rank and by which we have so long and familiarly addressed you A few of your veteran comrades agan formed in line and joining the citizens of Canton take thia oppor to make pronounced their high regard for you The ability and fidelity with which you have discharged great public trusts and the recognition of your countrymen of long and useful service to the state and nation are exceedingly gratifying to your Canton and Stark county friends We welcome it to you as neighbors without distinction of party bearing in mind that while you have acted in a broader field you have not lost eight of the duties and obliga tions of the citizen and with your many cares and responsibilities you have al ways found time and opportunity to lend
