Newspaper Circulating Thoroughly in the Heart of Winnebago Count THOMPSON WINNEBAGO COUNTY IOWA THURSDAY 16 MARCH 2000 VOLUME 105 NUMBER 37 Miracle on Lynn Street Anyone in the Thompson area need not look far for proof that miracles do happen The local miracle on Lynn Street is in the form of Stephanie Hill who just a year ago was not expected to live after an auto accident With her pelvis shattered into hundreds of pieces Stephanie was flown to Minneapolis in ex tremely critical condition Her loss of blood was tremendous and she suffered severe road burns from being pinned be neath the pickup and slid across the highway ROAD TO RECOVERY As many are aware March 13 was the one year anniversary of Steps accident It has been a year of learning for her family and her community Steph spent over 120 days flat on her back and another 25 days learning how to walk and use a wheelchair During that year her skin grafts have improved at a remarkable rate She still has some loss of nerve endings in her right leg and foot but she does have limited use of both It has not stopped her from trying ev a 17 year old should try and then some according to her dad Larry Two weeks ago she had an other appointment back in Min neapolis with the specialists Af ter several checkups they said she was not a candidate for the pelvis surgery she had been an The team agrees they could reconstruct her pelvis and hip but the risk of additional nerve damage is too high There was a good chance they could repair the pelvis but dam age enough nerves to leave her leg useless explained L Hill Not a very good tradeoff or gamble The hundreds of bro ken pieces of her pelvis have healed even though several over lap or are healed crooked At least they are solid Bone has regrown at the top of the femur trying to reform the hip socket not in the right place or at the correct angles but a socket is there ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY cel the one year anniversary of her near fatal vehicle accident junior Stephanie Hill left served cake to all the students at the Buffalo Center school Monday She is pictured with friends and classmates Kelli Gruis center and Jamie Thomsen Steph still has surgeries ahead of her and has decided to take care of some of her graft issues and functional limits yet this spring She wants to be ready for prom Sound like a 17 year old girl She will be fitted with a foot support and shoe lift to take pressure off her spine and level up the discrepancy left by the pelvis fractures At some point she will probably need hip replacements She continues with physical therapy to improve her mobility Life throws some unexpected curves to everyone and Stephanie received hers last year However she has contin ued on with courage a positive attitude and a smile on her face She appreciates the to share her story with ers about how God her family and wonderful supportive friends and community have helped her through this ordeal After high school she plans to attend college and would like to enter a profession where she can help others She certainly real izes how many people have helped her and she would like to return that gift Set March Early Childhood meeting The March Early Childhood meeting is set for pm Tuesday March 28 at the North School audito rium Buffalo Center Guest speaker Mark Shepp will talk on Discipline and the strong willed child Guest speaker years American Cancer Societys Daf Days remind everyone who has pledged to purchase daffo dils that the pickup day is Fri day March 17 from 36 pm at the Thompson Senior Center Anyone who was not con about purchasing a bou quet and who wishes to do so may call Joan Christiansen and supper Saturday night Thompson Fire Department will be sponsoring their annual Chili Soup Contest and supper Saturday night March 18 starting at 5 pm at the fire hall Serving will continue until the soup is gone according to the committee in charge of this years event Anyone entering the contest is reminded to have their chili or other type of soup to the fire hall by pm The top three soups will be selected by those attend ing the supper Prizes will be awarded to those winners The menu will include various types of chili a variety of soups bread bars sherbert furnished by The Grand and a beverage A freewill offering will be taken at the door Funds will be used to maintain and update equip ment used by the fire depart ment Veterans to meet March 21st All area veterans are reminded of the March 21 meeting to be held at 6 pm at Air Bears Res in Thompson Free lunch and coffee will be served followed by a 7
