to do ing dishonest things for the benefit of the party is but paving the way dishonest things for himself Those political string pullers in Em met county who tried to induce a Dick mson county man to assist them iu defeating Dr Fuller ran up against a circumstance Their plea that Milford had defeated every candidate from other parts of the county while true was not sufficient to shake the Dickin son county mans loyalty to Dr Fuller Last fall the Milford Mail announced in a vainglorious way the fact that they had washed their windows The Spirit Lake Beacon brethern are even have painted aud papered the interior of their print shop Its an awful example to set before the rest ol us We may he tempted to turn our establishment into a palace in order not to be behind the times What would we do without our con reports The following is from a recent one While it maybe true that Spain romantic Spain is the land where the light of chivalry lingered longest above horizon it is true that its people with their many decaying cathe aud priests still to the rude past cast a longing glance be hind Potatoes are growing well The truth of the old adage go away from home to learn the news is again in the following item from a Lost Island correspondent to the Spencer News The town of Terril was badly wip ed out Terril has a windmill with a tower feet high the wheel was blown away last winter and put up again by Homer Pitchers from Spencer The boys did good work as the mill weathered out the gale tho it was expected every minute that it would go WE HAVE GOOD ROADS From the Spirit Lake Beacon For years there has been agitat ion everywhere over the matter of better highways but up to date the chief pro duct is hot air During recent weeks the roads of Iowa have been all bad and in many places practically ble Farming has been retarded horse flesh sacrificed profanity promoted and trade paralyzed It is as the impost tion of a heavy handicap on enterprise and progress What are we going to do about it Keep on talking aud wish ing and wondering This fixes no makes no grades There is just oneway to get good roads and that is to make em Dickin son is among the newer counties of the State with the smallest taxable basis of any one of the ninety and nine but it would surprise anyone making investi gation to know how much money has been raised for highway improvement and how comparatively little has been accomplished There has been a great deal of waste in expenditure and this is in a large measure due to a paten work policy For permanent road work three things are necessary lo drain the roadway throw up grades and make a hard but porous surface Eleven years ago teams mired in the streets of Spirit Lake and street was practically impossible That year in the business portion good drainage was provided and about ten inches ot bank gravel placed on the surface Since that time nothing in the way or improvement and repair has been clone except with an occasional load of gravel or cinders and this late enormous rain fall has hardly made a smear streets Just as we work our country roads by scraping together a ridge of loam and clay to be washed away or wheeled out of shape just so long will we continue to waste our and wallow in the mud In this part of the State there is gravel within reasonable hauling distance ot almost every section It is the best of road making material A grade made and drained and ed with this gravel is an assured good road for many years with a mere frac tion of yearly expenditure let with in forty rods to a mile or so of such material we have m the aggregate hundreds of miles of roads that in a wet season are so soft as to oe almost impassible and in a dry time so rough as to afford little comfort Our farmers and our business men must wake up Within the past few weeks Spirit Lake has raised for the soldiers renn ion and the Fourth of July consider ably more than a thousand dollars This is all right It was easy to raise and will be well expended Suppose Spirit Lake should raise a thousand dollars for permanent road making With this show of enterprise and deter suppose we should theu say to Arnolds Park to Milford to Terni to Superior to Montgomery and to Lake Park wont you get into i this came to the extent of your ability Then go to the farmers of each com munity and say how much will you nive in time and money Then go to he authorities of county and say how much will you do to help this important work Then pro ceed to apply all these funds and this to the making and finishing or permanent roads With such a cam as this Dickinson county would show to the world just how this road problem may be practically solved while making the best invest in local experience We will never have good roads in
