Shonnard Street apartment By JOHN GRAU And KENNETH TERRELL The Post Standard A woman died and two of her grandchildren were seriously wounded in a shooting Sunday on the city's near west side Virginia C Hackett 62 was found dead in her apartment at Shonnard Street when police arrived shortly past noon The grandsons John Paul Jones 16 and Eugene Jones 15 were in senous condition at sity Hospital Hackett's son Benjamin said his mother looked out for children in the neighborhood She was the kind of woman that anybody in the neighborhood could come into her house if it was dinner time and he said Our doors were always open She was just everybody's mom Virginia Hackett's husband John died on New Year's Day Benjamin Hackett said his mother was still wearing black The shooting happened just be- fore noon police said They learned of the shooting after Eugene Jones knocked on the door of the door neighbors and told them to call 911 said Syracuse Police CapL Richard P Walsh who is heading the investigation When police arrived they found Eugene Jones in the front yard where he had collapsed Inside the apartment they found Hackett and John Paul Jones who was scious Hackett was dead Police were able to briefly talk with Eugene Jones before he was taken to the hospital Walsh said The grandsons were living with Hackett but Walsh said he did not know how long they had been there
