36 years old live in Montreal and hive for upward of and have a family and have for three years past been proprietor of the United States Hotel in Montreal I have looked at the testimony of one John Deveney before the Military Court in session at Washington City as published in the New York Tribune and other New York city papers ol the ISth Slay I am satisfied this man Deveney is the same person I knew here last fall and Winter He boarded at my Hotel from February to April 6 He told me he belonged to ton City and that ho was then employed as a bookkeeper in Notre Dame street in this city He told me he had weighed 276 pounds He was rather light complexioned aud had dark hair He was generally well dressed He was to intemperance and I he left my house that be was a gambler and had very dissolute habits He cheated me ent ol my for board amounting to upward of as my books show He absconded from Montreal last Winter and went to tho United States He was suspected and indeed accused of being concerned in the robbery of Mr John Warren wholesale and retail tobacconist corner of Notre Dame and St Gabriela streets in conjunction with one James and Lavoie and vole ward tried convicted and sentenced to tho where Green now is Lavoie escaped from tho police while being carried there They were associates of and frequently visited him and Gambled wilh him wrote sometime in Mr Warren's books rim away as SOOD as the robbery known I found out some time after he ed wirh me that he was a very bad man utterly destitute of honesty or tenth or veracity He cheated other hotel of their bills as well as me He left a wilh me when he absconded a few worthless hos in it He attempted on two occasions to pas bad bank on me One of them was and the other on a broken or bogaE bank He left these bills room in an un- sealed envelope addressed to himself I havo the notes and the envelop From my edge of him and oi His character 101 dishonesty and his want of truth and veracity I would not believe him on his oath I do no believe his testimony above mentioned or cou sider it worth anything I found out just before heran away that he had tried to gamble with cleared him ont as soon as I discovered his character He was with me but a few days and went away some distance up town I In a few days after camo to my house that he had previously been a short at tho American Hotel iu this city and had been kicked out of it for bringing there a brothel keeper ftom Baltimore his mistress and had also other ey told me that he was one of the Baltimore detective police He sometimes claimed to ba a southern Confederate He had an very much like him in character and one who swindled me also That associate has I understand left this city and gone to Washington to be a witness having been sent for at instance BO I am told he stated before he went I would not believe Deveney or that associate whose name I suppress at present as probably he may not Deveney has sworn before military as reported in the newspapers that he did not know Mr Sanders when he states he saw him with Booth in October or November last yet I distinctly recollect that he told me on tne first of October that he was well with Mr Sanders and intimate with him and other gentlemen of the South here I will add that I am a New Yorker by birth that I President Lincoln personally and onca lived several months in the same house
