in what they say is a costly ordinance More than a dozen proprietors met at Sam Maguires Thursday to discuss the March 14 smoking ban None of us are against the smoking ban Jane Wilke of Sam Maguires said Fairness is the issue for business owners Jerry Castro of Coachs Corner said bar owners wouldnt have any complaints if alter natives offering smoking were not so close Coachs Corner is losing thousands of dollars a day he said I had a regular customer say Orland Park is telling me it wants me to go to another town Castro said In October Trustee Kathy Fenton said the bans have to be equitable to communities to be fair to businesses Wilke said Fenton told business owners last fall that if the village didnt ban smoking it would fall under the Cook County ordinance anyway I believe she misled us at meeting Wilke one understood the village could make variations to the ordinance I understand if she was misled My point now is that were not reacting to new information Officials from neighboring Tinley Park deferred its smoking ban to June 12008 following a more than study of the bans effect on the community While the study showed no overall impact on city sales taxes it also indicated not all small businesses will survive Wilke said bar owners agree with the ultimate goal of the smoking ban Nonsmokers should have a nonsmoking envi Wilke said But people to smoke should be able to do what they want too Bars and pubs are smoky for a reason Thats where people go to do that Bar owners are hoping for an amendment to the ordinance permitting bars and entertainment venues to allow smoking with restrictions I put my life savings into this place Wilke said If I would have known this was my destiny I would not have Trustees and a mayor decide the fate of all of us Castro said business owners plan to work er asking the village board to reconsider Our plan is to fight back if we can he said But it is hard to fight city hall Race is on for Orland Park fire district board
