LEA AUGUST 2 1883 at the Postoffice in Albert Lea as sec ond class moil matter Tfl The Printed address ill your cates the to which your subscription is paid For instance Smith John means that John Smith has paid for his paper until May 1st 1878 It means even more That he should lose no time in paying up to the present time and that he need not wait until he comes to Albert Lea to do so lor he can enclose the money in a letter in the presence ot the master and forward it at our risk which we hope he as well as all others who owe us will not delay doing Jacob Hosteller ot Albert Lea township 18 a for the office ef Probate Judge A terrible earthquake occurred on the island of in the bay of on Saturday evening last It is estimated that people perished while more were injured We have reliable information thai the wheat crop of the Red Kiver ley from Fargo west is not worth the cutting only in exceptional cases Competent judges say that the yield cannot exceed 6 bushels per acre withstanding the lying report of the Pioneer Press By honoring the Grand Army of the we honor said the mayor of Denver in an official request for the business houses of that city to close during a portion of the exercises of the National Encampment of that last week The places were closed in accordance with the request James Carey the Dublin informer was shot just before the landing of the vessel which was conveying him with his family to Capetown He died in few hours His assailant was a Fenian by the name of O'Donnell who ed him from Dublin The news of the affair was received in Dublin with great joy The National Encampment of the Grand Army of the Republic just held at Denver Colorado was attended by about war veterans and was stupendous success The next ing a year hence will be at lis and will be the greatest event in the history of that city or of the state Grand Army Posts are multiplying rapidly counting among their mem bers the greatest soldiers and statesmen in the world and their meetings an more interesting and valuable as time advances and the war period grows remote In the telegraphic columns of the Pioneer Press one day last week a buncombe report from the j Red River Valley of the astonishing j in the wheat crop of that j within a day or previous i the sending of the dispatch by 011 of heavy had turned le color of the grain from yellow to j reen in so manifest a manner as to be isible to the naked eye during the rocess of changing and as a of this marvelous phenomenon moderate crop of from 20 to 25 Is per acre was expected As if to ive an air of credence to this absurd and make it more emphatic Pioneer Press alluded to it in an paragraph as though it was he most natural thing in the world hat wheat the color of amber ed and headed out at the heighth of roni 12 to 15 inches with shrivelled heads of from 1 to and 2 inches ong as we have been assured is the ase by those who have recently come from there and made thorough be healed and cured at he most sensitive period of its growth and brought forth in a single night and day by rain or by any power on earth except by the special tion and command of deity and be made to produce a moderate yield of from 20 to 25 bushels per acre or the half of that amount The people of other regions are prepared to believe great things of the Bed River Valley jut when it comes to the magical of a dwarfed and blighted wheat crop from a colorless state to a deep and beautiful green and that at such a rapid rate as to be apparent to while the change is taking place it is taxing their powers of ence beyond endurance The people of Northern Dakota lay awake nights scheming how to boom that country and the telegraphic columns of the St Paul and Minneapolis dailies herald heir amazing tales to the world while o keep up their own ends of the fraud hey make them more binding by mention The wheat crop of Northern Dakota this year is a able failure as it was in portions of it last year but they are bound to boom and boom to the very last moment to if possible continue the fictitious values of real estate and get selves shut as the Boosters say of their lands at speculative prices We have the very best authority for ing that the wheat crop of the Bed River Valley last year did not equal the crop in Freeborn county either in amount or in quality and yet to have read the Minneapolis and St Paul dailies one would have supposed that he crop of Southern Minnesota was a very insignificant affair while that of the Red River Valley was simply im- mense There is no doubt now in the minds of people of Freeborn are in favor of senators and represen keeping their pledges and ing the instructions of their constiti we mildly condemned ilr Stens course He now says that h disapproves of the course of Sergean and Bell but that he would not vot for Mr Bartlett for chairman of th convention because he did not regar him as being a proper man for the pos ition The fact is Mr Stensrud wa invited to meet with those delegate who disapproved of the course of ou senator and representative prior to th assembling of the convention but di to do so At the same time h gave assurances that he would ac with those delegates in the This lie did not do The first divisio was upon the selection of a chairman and in that division Mr Stensrud side with the Sergeant faction This w have no doubt he intended to do fron the start To all such and deception as this THE will ever be found opposed We war to see delegates come to convention and act like men carrying views of those who sent them there i good faith If they don't do this the will be pretty apt to hear from us W have watched this man's course atse eral conventions and we know that has been such as to lead both sides t claim him If the Railroad Lands Windom Citizen Our townsman Robinson has a tree claim in Martin county on a ter section of the lands which have been claimed by the Southern sota K E Co as a part of their land grant but a recent decision of the authorities was averse to their claim and allowing filings to be made as on other government lands This claim is situated at a station on the road west of Fairmont joining the town site and will be valuable Mr K went there to do some breaking this week in compliance with the law His team had started in and turned over a few furrows when a man who claimed the land on a contract from the railroad company and ordered Mr K to stop work and leave as he should have an injunction served at once Mr Robinson refusing to go the man left but soon returned with a large party of men They told Mr R that they had bought these lands of the company and should re- sist any attempt at occupation by the government claimants that he must abandon the claim and leave or take the consequences Mr K told them he had the proper filing papers and had come in good faith to make the sary and should try and do so then mounting the sulky plow started along but was soon ed by the men who pulled him from the seat took the team from the plow and hitched it to the wagon attached the plow behind and warned Mr R not to try it again as they were bound to fight off every government claimant Had Mr Robinson been armed and disposed to fight for his just rights there might have been a tragedy to record but wisely considering tion the better part of valor returned home to await the
