Spirit Lake Beacon (Newspaper) - November 28, 1974, Spirit Lake, Iowa ft for BUSINESS VOLUME FOUR SECTIONS 54 PAGES NEWSPAPER FOR LAKE AND DICKINSON COUNTY IOWA THURSDAY NOVEMBER 28 1S74 No BVDs For Area Plates NEW LICENSE staff of the Dickinson County Treasurers office show off the 1975 Iowa motor vehicle plates which will be going on sale this coming Monday Left to right are Melba Wallace displaying a motorcycle plate Dianne Carney Area Head Start Program Has Successful Beginning with the children making masks and caramel apples A Halloween dinner was held and Ben Diane holding a truck plate Marie Barrett Dickinson County Treasurer holding an auto plate Jan Wilson holding a mobile home plate Betty Robinson holding a trailer plate and Eunice Baird Sale of the plates will begin at 6 am Monday Alas there shall be no BVDs for Dickinson County residents on their license plates that is It seems that the state of Iowa has taken a little of the fun out of owning a car here by eliminating the BVD letter combination from Dickinson Countys 1975 auto license plates were cheated out of their BVDs as a result of an editing of the letter prefixes before the plate makers wentto work The state used a list which was edited by California and refined by the Iowa Department of Motor Vehicles All possibly offensive letter combinations were eliminated The plates which are due to go on sale this coming Monday at 6 am in the Treasurers office in the Dickinson County Courthouse will have a dif ferent appearance this year A three letter and three number combination will replace the all number plates of the past The two county identification on the left side of the plate will be retained thanks to action of the last General Assembly The plates will have a life of three years They will be renewed in 1976 and 1977 by the application of a sticker like those used the past two years The distribution system of plates this year is also being altered There will be no special reservations or hold backs on the first 500 plates as has been the case in the past Thai means that if you want to get plate BVA youre going to have to beat everyone else to the Courthouse early Monday morning Those who have payed for their plates to vacations or winter residences outside the state will have their orders processed after the first 500 plates have been sold The office will not stay open late Monday for plate sales The plate sale policy changes are the result of recently enacted laws which now cover county workers and make it too expensive to have secretaries working late into the night processing paperwork after the first day of sales People may think were greedy commented Marie Barrett Dickinson County Treasurer about the basis for the sale of the first 500 plates but we have to make a numerical list of the plates sold and I have to watch the number of hours the girls work The plates will be available during regular business hours at the Treasurers office until the end of January without penalty After that date a fine will be assessed for delinquent registration License plates for mobile homes trucks trailers and motorcycles will also go on sale Monday These plates will be similar to the auto plates but will have only two letters and four numbers The mobile home plates will carry no year The purchaser will receive a sticker for either a half or a full years registration whichever they chose to purchase Letter prefixes in Dickinson County wili be AX or AY for trucks JE for mobile homes and NN for motorcycles The new system of letters and numbers for all vehicles was instituted so that the vehicle registration system could be placed on the computer system Registration may be made by mail The registration fee is on the lower lefthand corner of the 1974 registration form except for trucks and trailers which are licensed according to weight The amount for 1974 automobile models should be checked on since most list prices were raised on these models A postage fee should be included with applications and cheeks made payable to the Dickinson County Treasurer The fee schedule for trucks and trailers is 3 ton 4 ton 45 5 ton 6 ton 7 ton 8 ton 9 ton 10 ton 11 ton 12 ton 13 ton 14 ton 15 ton 20 ton 25 ton 30 ton 35 ton ASC Committeemen Election This Month Following workshops for the staff and parents the to carve Thanksgiving turkey Yet it was the who set the table for the first Thanksgiving celebrated by the Pilgrims on Dec 13 1621 A year earlier the liny band of colonists had stepped from the Mayflower onto the wild Massachusetts coast Half of the 102 English refugees succumbed that winter to malnutrition disease and brutal cold As one of New Englands most powerful native rulers Massasoit had Ihe firepower to wipe out the weakened colony in a single raid Instead he signed a peace treaty with the pact which he observed faithfully to his death 40 years later But more important the showed the colonists how to stalk the wild turkey how to cultivate the native corn and pumpkin how to upgrade the crops by burying fish to fertilize the seeds The harvest was a bountiful one Three log storehouses bulged with corn wheat rye barley and peas The autumn woods teemed with deer and wild turkey and the sea and rivers were alive with fish For I lie colonists it was a time of soaring hopes Grateful to a divine Providence and its Bradford declared a period of feasting and 90 of his Indians were in as guests of honor to the first American Thanksgiving celebration Jn many ways openhearted Americans are now repaying kindness by helping others around the world to overcome plights not unlike those which afflicted the Pilgrims Nearly billion much of it earmarked for giving emerging peoples a foothold on the 20lh century is contributed through churches every year Half a billion dollars pours annually into the United Fund Campaign About million a year is donated to the American Red Cross
