Day Observance Set Wi ANTIQUES TRANSFERRED Several items that were once located in the Gardner Log Cabin in Arnolds Park have been relocated in the Dickinson County Museum in Spirit Lake The State Historical Society of Iowa determined these antiques were not intrinsic to the cabin but would be valuable to the county Loren Horton field representative for the society checks off those items moved Saturday from the visitor center adjacent to the cabin as Museum Curator Mrs Dale Peterson inspects each Mike Griffith an associate with the society assists in the transfer operation Items From Gardner Log Cabin Transferred to County Museum A gift of historically valuable items from the Abbie Gardner Sharp log cabin in Arnolds Park has been made to the Dickinson County Museum located in the former depot in Spirit Lake by the Iowa State Historical Society Loren N Horton historical specialist for the state society informed Mrs Dale Faye Peterson of Milford curator of the county museum that the state board has approved the transfer of about 60 items from the cabin to the museum An evaluation of the complete inventory of the Gardner cabin now being restored was con ducted recently by Horton and Dr Harstad to determine which items would be retained for the cabin and which would be donated to the museum In a letter received by Mrs Peterson Horton stated The Board of Curators of the State Historical Society voted final approval of transfer of items May 9 1974 as indicated as acceptable by the local society upon examination by Mrs Peterson May 2 Because the items are not in West 30 52274 a Big 47 52174 G the Gardner Log Cabin and the Site Visitor Center and because they do have a high intrinsic value to the Dickinson County area we propose that they be donated to the Dickinson County Historical Society Museum Mrs Peterson announced this week the museum will be open Memorial Day Monday May 27 from 1 to 4 pm and the above items plus many others acquired since last season will be on exhibit This will be a premier showing before the museum opens on regular schedule June 4 added Mrs Peterson Mrs Peterson announced this week that small pieces of the lattice work that formerly surrounded the Gardner Cabin will be given free of charge to museum visitors Monday They will be appropriately marked and can be considered a bonafide souvenir of the Iowa Great Lakes region she said A parade a fly over and the appearance of two U S Army officers as keynote speakers will highlight the 1974 Memorial Day ob servance in Spirit Lake Mon day Officials of the two local service organizations VFW and American Legion have spent many hours arranging for the event on the day the nation pays tribute to military veterans Some 37 units will be included in the parade military vehicles and guns bands equestrians antique cars youth groups floats and color guards Mrs Vance Myler riding Mr Hooligan the horse that has made two appearance in the Rose Bowl will head the march slated to travel north on Ithaca Ave from Lake St to 12th Street then east to Hill Ave south to 20th Street and then disband in the parking lot across from the courthouse The parade starts at am following a service at the Superior Cemetery and the annual program is set at am on the east courthouse lawn In case of inclement weather the ceremonies are to be held in John Webb Gym Color guards of the VFW and Legion will place the colors at followed by the singing of the national anthem by Tom Higgins At precisely 11 am if the weather and energy crisis permit Air Force jets will swoop over the city this followed by the moment of silence The Rev Wayne Carlson of United Methodist Church will present the invocation and then Cpt Brian G MacDonald and Lt Col James Lollis will present their addresses After the benediction by Pastor Fred Peters of Grace Lutheran Church activities move to the three cemeteries in the area Lakeview Lakeland Memory Gardens and St Margarets Conducting services will be the Revs Eugene Gapp and Harold Bartz and Fr N J Becker Concluding the services will be the annual dropping of a wreath on Big Spirit Lake Bob Ridder is to pilot the plane and Robert Taylor will drop the wreath on the lakes south shore just off the Orleans public beach A display of military equipment missiles guns etc will be located in front of the VFW post home on Lake St from 12noon until pm Due to this special feature the treats for participants in the parade will be dispensed at city hall rather than the service club as in previous years And a special observance is planned by the U S Air Force Continued on Page 2 Cpt Brian MacDonald Speakers NOTE These two U S Army officers will be keynote speakers during Memorial Day ceremonies in Spirit Lake on Monday Here are biographies of each Captain Brian G MacDonald a native of Wash moved to Iowa with his family at the age of six in 1946 He spent five years in the City area before moving back to Seattle He completed school in Seattle and enlisted in the United States Army in 1965 Following basic training at Fort Leonard Wood Mo and advanced individual training at Fort Sam Houston Texas he volunteered for duty with the United States Army Special Forces Green Upon completion of airborne training at Fort Benning Ga he returned to Fort Sam Houston for training as a Special Forces medic Cpt MacDonald volunteered for the Infantry Officers Candidate School was accepted and commissioned in the infantry as a Second Lieutenant in April 1967 He then returned to the Green serving four months as executive officer of Detachment A 29 and six months as Commander Detachment A 39 Company D Seventh Special Forces Group Fort Bragg N C Cpl MacDonald was then assigned to the Fifth Special Group Republic of Vietnam in April 1968 where he served nine months as Operations Assistant Operations Officer of Detachment B 43 and 15 months as Commander Detachment A 421 In April 1970 Cpt MacDonald moved to the 8th Infantry Division in Europe serving 16 months as Commandant Headquarters and Headquarters Company 1st Battalion 509th Parachute Infantry Regiment and nine months as Personnel Officer in the same unit He departed Europe in 1972 and graduated from the Armor Of ficer Advanced Course at Fort Knox Ky in June 1973 Since that time he has served as assistant to the Headquarters Commandant XVIII Airborne Corps and Fort Bragg Cpt MacDonald has been awarded the following badges and decorations Parachutist Badge Combat Badge National Defense Service Medal Vietnam Campaign Medal six Vietnamese Parachutist Badge four awards of the Bronze Star Medal three for four awards of the Viet Cross of Gallantry with silver star Air Medal Silver Star Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Palm Meritorious Unit Citation and the Vietnamese Civic Action Medal He reads writes and speaks Vietnamese He has qualified as expert with both service rifle and sidearm Cpt wife and two children reside with him in Fayetteville N C His father Sam and mother reside in Spirit Lake Cpt MacDonald has been a member of John W Kidd Post 4514 since 1970 During his slay at Spirit Lake he represents the Commanding General XVIII Airborne Corps Lieutenant General Richard J Seitz Li Col James Lollis is the officer in charge of Army Recruiting for South Dakota Southwest Minnesota and this part of Iowa He commands the Army recruiters for this area from his headquarters in Sioux Falls Colonel Lollis is the son of a retired career officer and claims Virginia as his home state He has over 18 years of active Army service which has included duly in Germany Korea Vietnam and various Army posts in this country His assignments have been varied and include duly as a District Senior Advisor in Vietnam and Director of Personnel for the 82nd Airborne Division Colonel Lollis holds a bachelors degree in philosophy and has done graduate work in Communications and Human Relations He is also a 1972 graduate of the Army Command and General Staff College at Fort Kans Its Back to 3 Dickinson County WILL have three magistrates again at least until June 30 1975 An order from an Iowa Supremo Court official issued in December of 1973 had cut the countys allotment of lower court judges from three to two soon April 29 the Dickinson County Judicial Magistrate Nominating Commission reappointed H T Martini and Mrs K R Loebach to terms which were to have commenced July 1 1974 John Chalstrom who was the third original magistrate named for a oneyear term to expire June 30 1974 was not However late in the 1974 session of the Iowa Legislature a passed that froze allocations of magistrates at the present level three for and directed the com mission to appoint judges for oneyear terms So the commission will meet again on Monday May 28 at 4 pm in the courthouse courtroom to consider appointments of the three magistrates for terms from July 1 1974 to June 30 1975 Poppy Day Poppy Day 1974 will be observed in Spirit Lake on Saturday May 25 ac cording to Chairman of America Legion Auxiliary Unit 23 Mrs Edd Good man The American Legion Auxiliary adopted the poppy as its memorial flower which pays tribute to the war dead and aids the living veterans and their families Members of the local auxiliary will be selling poppies in the business district Saturday Noting Holiday Most Spirit Lake business houses will close Monday in observance of Memorial Day Federal state and municipal government offices are also closing for the holiday There will be no rural or city delivery of mail Monday years The peak was reached in 1969 when 105 seniors received sheepskins there were 101 graduates in 1972 and 97 last year Several activities have already been held for seniors but yet to come are the class breakfast and Class Day today The latter event is also slated for John Webb Gym at 2 pm Featured during Class Day will be the presentation of scholastic speech athletic citizenship and other awards Keynote speaker at com will be Dr Raymond D Zinser a professor at Graceland College in Lamoni Title of his address is Protest and Change 1974 1984 During his teaching career Dr Zinser has taught at the Latin School for Boys in Chicago Wayne State University of Detroit the University of Missouri at Kansas City The University of Drake University and is currently serving as Professor of Sociology at Graceland Dr Zinser conducts management seminars for educational business and in executives and has served in industry fulltime He also gives addresses to national conventions and trade associations In World War II he served as a naval aviator and during the Korean War he was assigned to the office of the Chief of Naval Operations as a special assistant providing briefings for the Secretary of the Navy and his staff in international and War Room During World War II he flew free balloons blimps and airplanes and provided air convoy protection and rescue Dr Zinser is past chairman of the executive committee of campus representatives for the Cooperative Social Welfare Action Program in Kansas City This is an experimental DR R D program for is colleges in the Kansas City region and Missouri Iowa Kansas colleges which is funded by the federal government The program was designed to provide a unique combination of academic and agency training in Kansas City for un majoring in social Continued on Page 2
