COUNTY IOWA THURSDAY AUGUST 22 House Planned Friday and Photos 15 Wafer Plant Ready for Visitors The public is invited to an open house Friday and Saturday at the City of Spirit Lakes Water Treat ment Plant where a ex pansion program has just been completed Visiting hours are from 9 to 12 noon and 2 to 5 pm on both days There will bfc conducted tours and coffee and pop will be served Finishing touches were underway early this week with the floors getting a battle ship gray paint Enlargement and modification of the existing plant has boosted the capacity to over 1500000 gallons of treated water daily over double its previous capacity Financing of the project is through water revenue No tax funds are involved The project also included re modeling and improvement of the pumping station at Orleans and laying a new 10 inch main from the source Big Spirit Lake to the treatment plant Visitors will see where in coming raw water enters the first treatment stage at the plant an aeration and carbon contact tank designed to eliminate objec tastes and odors The water then flows into the huge up flow clarifier where lime and alum are added for softening and clarification Devices for adding the var ious chemicals such as the lime slacker which is fed from a huge silo atop will be demonstrated There are other machines to introduce carbon dioxide into the water which will eliminate lime deposits in the distribution system and chlorine for purification of the water to make sure it is safe for drink ing People will then see the water move into the sand filters where any remaining particles are re moved and then pumped into the surface reservoir for storage until it is pumped into the dis system and the elevated tanks There is a testing laboratory where operating personnel run continuous tests on the treated water Regular sampling and analysis of the water assure the consumer a supply of pure water which is approved by the Iowa Department of Public Health Flexibility was one of the ma jor considerations in the design of the water plant It essentially is two separate plants either one of which is capable of producing treated water In event of break down or repair this feature elim any possibility of a com plete shutdown and a possible emergency situation In addition there is an auxiliary generator in case of a public power failure Installation of new control sys tems make it possible to operate the plant almost automatically and when completed will include monitoring of water levels in the citys two elevated tanks Valves in the filtering system are now activated with com pressed air and operated from control panels With algae growth at its peak in Spirit Lake tile plant is get ting its most severe test in con trolling taste and odor problems ARNOLDS PARK When the disastrous June 13 tornado swept over Arnolds Park the big FU 40 Beach Cottage re sort was of the Lakes Regions resort facilities Seven lakefront apartment units making up the top level of a lakefront building were obliterated Fortunately occupants of the units were hud in the nearby recreation building which rode out the storm with no major damage Actually the resort was quick ly back in business falling back on numerous other nearby accom operated by the Fil Ken Fillenwarth son of A T Fillenwarth who found ed the resort said a lot of peo ple who had reservations didnt show up because they thought Barry Delegate To Convention Martin Barry of Lake Park is one of the 52 delegates from Iowa to the Democratic National Convention which opens in Chi cago next Monday In addition to the delegates Iowa will have 44 individuals serving as alter nates who could serve as a dele gate in the event that any of the elected delegates are unable to attend Barry a farmer and organizer for the National Farmers Organ ization has been active in the Democratic Party of Iowa for 20 years but has never participated in a national convention He has served the party as finance chair man and is presently the chair man of the Dickinson County Democratic Central Committee The delegates and alternates were chosen at the 1968 Demo cratic Presidential Convention held in Des Moines May 2425 Each state is allocated a certain number of delegates and alter nates everything was wiped out We could have handled them easily he added Two duplex units were com this year they also have a new motel constructed in 1967 plus six other recently constructed lakeshore units for vacationing families The lower units of the damaged building escaped major damage and they were quickly back in service af ter wreckage was cleared from the top side Now the have completed plans for construction of two more levels of rental units above the undamaged row of apartments There will be two rows of eight apartments above the present ones Each will have a large private sundeck facing the lake With a setback they will be larger than the old units which were destroyed Each is lent to a apartment with a full kitchen The new structure will measure 196 by 24 feet Ken said construc tion on the new building will start right after Labor Day The elder Mr Fillenwarth is SI and resides at the resort All together the Fillenwarth fam ily has operated the resort for over 50 years Crash Injuries One man was fatally injured and his brother seriously hurt in a accident 2 miles north of Corners on county road K about 2 a m Sun day Dead is Richard John Naber 22 son of Mr and Mrs Roman Naber of rural Spirit Lake His brother Glen 24 is in Dickinson County Memorial Hospital with serious head and neck lacera tions They were occupants of a car went out of traveling south on the and rolled into a ditch Both were thrown from the vehicle and it was not learned which one was driving Richard Naber died at the hos pital at 8 p m Sunday about 16 hours after the accident of crushing head and chest injuries The body was taken to Harpole Tenold Funeral Home The car in which they were riding was totally demolished as it skidded and rolled several hundred feet down into the ditch Highway Patrolman Bob Cherry Deputy Sheriff Dave Kanellis and passersby searched over an hour when it For Collection Classes In September Tuberculin Tests Planned Next Fall Students in the first ninth and twelfth grades in all Dickinson County schools will receive tuberculin skin tests this fall according to action taken by the Dickinson County Schoolmasters at a meeting this week with E D Baird county dent of schools The schoolmasters for the program starting Sept 30 and continuing through Oct 4 in cooperation with the County TB and Health Association The test indicates whether there isa possible tubercular infection in the individual In other action the ters elected S K Rowlands Harris County Sept 911 No segment of Americans are more involved with humanity than those who regularly donate blood Mrs Herb Sindt counts chairman said They dont have to picket or march in parades Their lacerations and fractures in a Trampoline mishap in the Lakes Region Sunday Taken to Dickinson County Me Hospital young Hansen was treated and held for vation His condition is satisfac tory He is the son of Mr and Mrs Leon Hansen Labor on City Streets Two men with lengthy records of intoxication offenses were sentenced to a weeks labor on Spirit Lake city streets by Mayor R C Mathews last weekend Iver Hansen of Spirit Lake and Harold Christofferson of Milford were arrested Saturday night by city police on drunkenness charges Mom for Overlooking Plan 4 Days Of Workshops For Teachers Preschool workshops for both elementary and high school ty members in Spirit Lake schools will be held August 26 30 it was announced this week by Richard Schuchert dent of schools The sessions are designed to review educational programs in the respective departments to acquaint new teachers with the system and to hear a number of specialists in various fields The joint session Friday Aug ust 30 will have Jean Purdy of the Iowa Training School for Girls as the speaker There also will be a panel discussion with Miss Purdy County Attorney Jack Bedell the Rev E D Thorn Chief of Police Owen Hurt and Don for po sitions on the Spirit Lake School District Board of Education have been filed for Dean Hummel and Glenn Carver both incumbents Their terms on the board expire this year The school election wUl be Sept 6 to fill the two positions both for threeyear terms The deadline for candidates to file for the election is August 26
