Smoke Signals (Newspaper) - March 11, 1953, Pinedale, Wyoming PINEDALE WYOMING VOLUME 1 15 MARCH Ten Ceate A VIGNETTE OF FRONTIER HISTORY told by Little Dave Johnson to Sid Reynolds Dave is a nice-looking spoken man small in stature and graceful in manner Dave is ing plenty of winters now but his memory is keen and we delight in his stories of the early days When I was a boy down in the Green Dave were mighty slim and sometimes we didn't eat oh what you might regular ule There was just Grandma and Mother and seven of us kids My Dad went away hunting one day and never came back I was the youngest but being a fair shot and pretty good at getting around Mother made me do a lot of the hunting That left my two oldest brothers free to go up on the mountain and cut poles and for the old 71 The 71 was a big cow outfit that was time We lived on Cottonwood a tributary of the Sweetwater Well one day Mother figured getting low on meat and that I should go didn't want to go but because the wind was blowing something terrible You know how is to hunt on a windy day My arguments didn't do any good though and Mother handed me the rifle arid a bunch of shells and told me to go hunting anyway So I pulled on out from the house and up country That wind was blowing the worst I ever I hit a deep canyon that I had ways wanted to explore and headed up it Finally I got to the head of the canyon and by golly you know it was a and right in the center of the head wall was a hole and the wind was coming right out of the hole and the wind quit right away That was sure a relief be- cause that was about to get me down I turned and headed back the canyon and hadn't gone far until a nice big buck deer jumped up did in those days Then I dressed him out nice and on my back and headed for home It was f late so I decided to and started of the got hall way up and ped I right knee on a my knee I couldn't think just What to do with that Boy Hurt in Freak Accident visitors on of this week knee cap right there it in my pocket and climbed on out of the canyon and went home When I got home some of the kids were playing shinny ball the way the Indian kids had showed us I laid my rifle down and ed for awhile After while Mother called us in for supper I had forgotten all about the deer until I went to set down at the table Mother told me I the deer out and hang him up I went out to the end of the Chouse took the buck off my back and hung him up I sort of tired after per and went right to bed but just as I was about to drop off to sleep I heard the cats fighting outside I knew darn well they were at that deer meat I jumped up ran outside as fast as I could there in the moonlight I could see those fighting over something on the ground I ran up to them and grabbed what they you it that mine which must have fallen out of my So I shook the stuck it back on my knee to bed By time Dave finished his story jaw had sagged clear ta was a rific roaring in my ears I could only make one comment what the lady bug said to tumble bug Pile it up big boy soine proposal to change the name of the town to North Pole at a ing in the Legion Hall on Tuesday evening March 10th The meeting was by Mayor Howard Masoner who introduced E 5 Cox of the erican Automobile Association in Cheyenne and Louis Boschetto of Rock Springs President of the Wyoming Motor Court ion Mr Boschetto is also State Senator from Sweetwater Cox and Boschetto presented the advantages of a change in name for publicity purposes Cox said that Hot Springs had at- visitors the summer after its was changed to Truth or later added that the town ed to change its name back now as the rush of visitors has tapered off He said that Santa Claus Indiana handled pieces of mail at Christmas time and had cement igloos as a tourist at- traction And if Big Piney Pole it might develop a winter resort comparable to Sun Valley Mr Boschetto said that no one was trying to persuade the ple of Big Piney to do anything they did not wish to do but that the Motor Court Association it would result in better business for the Courts if the name were North Pole that many travellers took a southern route rather than Route across Wyoming be- weather reports from Big Piney Williams Edwards of Pinedale Secretary of the Motor Courts sociation said that he had just come along for the ride and sat down Some of the
