Don Schieber harvests wheat this week near Chattanooga in southwestern Oklahoma with his new John Deere combine which includes fourwheel drive and a 36foot header to cut the wheat Custom wheat harvester Don Schieber took a six foot leap into the mud this week and enjoyed it Now let me sort that out On April 10 Schieber personally watched workers at a John Deere plant in Illinois assemble his four wheel drive model 9760STS com bine which features a 36footwide header that cuts the wheat This week near Chattanooga in southwestern Oklahoma Schieber and his green machine were in a race Ifs not a race against others but rather if s annual dash called wheat harvest In this race custom harvesters and producers race against weather markets and several dozen more ever changing factors On the day I went out with Schieber he was chomping at the bit to get into a field to cut wheat for producer David Gammill The cus tom cutter had been in the field Saturday but of an inch of rain Sunday morning sent the action into a rain delay which can be costly and and not necessarily in that order The catch on this day was that although the wheat was dry enough to cut this field still had puddles standing in many areas Thats where his leap into the mud comes into play Cutting and cutting more The 36foot header on Schiebers new combine is 6 feet wider than the header on his previous one And he
