confident that Iowa convention will give Bryan a unanimous pledge for Mr Sells has 10000 but Bryans picture and he It now seems former Senator almost George City will he nominated for gov ernor by the democratic state conven tion tomorrow Nearly all the party leaders are for Ball and if they have influence with the convention he will be named on the first ballot The sentiment for Ball has not crystallized into a definite movement as yet but there is every indication the delegates are drifting in his direction without being pushed Into line by a boom can There is also a strong un in favor of putting Bert Boies son of former Governor Horace Boies on the ticket with Ball for lieu tenant governor The ticket and Boies seems to sound good to the but Mr Boies is reluct ant to accept second place on the tick et Caucus of Leaders A caucus of the leaders of the dem factions will be held this after noon and evening to frame up a har mony program which all are said to be in favor of to unite the party for the state and congressional elections This caucus is expected to pick on Senator Ball as the candidate for gov ernor but it is likely enough other be kept in the field to give appearance of a spirited race Former Senator Claude R Porter of Centerville arrived this morning and was at once surrounded by friends from various parts of the state urging him to enter the gubernatorial con test district democrats beaded by State Representative San key of Decatur county are insisting certain that rae is a young man but is a war vet W Ball of eran having seen active service with the Iowa governor has been brought forth in State Represen Will C Whiting of Monona county and the eleventh district may support him if the caucus of leaders does not decide that party harmony can best be preserved by naming Sen ator Ball county democrats headed by State Committeeman Thom as Kelly of the sixth district are quiet y plugging for the nomination of D W Hamilton temporary chairman of the convention but the Ball movement seems to have absorbed most of Ham possible strength Will Come In A resolution endorsing Governor Cummins is almost certain to fie sprung in the convention S H Lau der is said to be on the way from Clark county with a Cummins resolu tion It is generally reported that Lauder got his Cummins resolution from Charley Walsh the Iowa member of the democratic national committee of Osceola a Jet low delegate Lauder Lauder has as much as said so continued Mayor McAuley and he declares he will pre sent it to the convention Lauder was a free but of recent president tons with spent all seeing to it that ev had a Bryan badge on his coat Wilbur W Marsh is believed to have put up the funds for the Bryan boom for the advertisement of his company the Iowa Dairy ENTHUSE FOR BRYAN CATO SELLS NOT A CANDIDATE Cato Sells of Vinton arrived in the city Sunday and spent the day at the Logan where he was greeted by num erous politicians and Waterloo friends He welland apparently en joying life even during the salubrious weather of August He is not in the of his friends for office this year as has been intimated His coun y would have given him a warm en tor the office of governor lad he permitted his name presented o the convention Enthusiastic friends permitted the announcement o be made that he would possibly run but the statement was without his sanction Benton county however is enthusiastic this year and to give vent BENTON COUNTY MAKE BIO DEMONSTRATION TOMORROW CATO SELLS ON OUTLOOK Public Mind In Mood and Will Rettore Democratic Party to Power Hon Cato Sells of Vinton arrived in the city Sunday afternoon and spen the time about the Logan home con with leaders of the democrat party with a view of getting more in touch with the situation throughout the state When Been by a representative of the Reporter this morning he stated that never in the history of the party in Benton county was there greater evidence of bar mony and enthusiasm than at the pres ent time It is a genuine awakening Democratic State Convention WATERLOO IOWA 1906 Headquarters Logan House east Irving House west Music for convention furnished by the Cedar Falls Concert Band THE DISTRICT CAUCUSES CAUCUSES A M SHAKE AT THE DISTRICT NO House parlors No Hall No House main court room No Bldg first floor No convention hall No club rooms Century blk No House supervisors No Bldg first floor No House small court room No convention hall No convention hall has claimed to be a democrat and we let him on the delegation for He says he will vote for Cummins for governor regardless of that Porter must run for is nominated here but he wants against Col Hepburn this fall democratic convention to indorse Porter has promised to give I dont doubt but that tion to the demands of his district Walsh is the author of the and it Is almost certain that he will enter the gubernatorial contest except possibly to receive a compli mentary vote as a preliminary to his congressional candidacy Representa tive Sankey and other democrats from the eighth district believe that Porter can be elected to congress against Hepburn this year Denison Personally Popular The personality of John D Denison with in the gubernatorial nomination f He already has several delegations pledged solid to him and is doing ef handshaking among the dele gates Denison is a brilliant orator capable of swinging crowds if he once gets into action He Is scheduled to be one of the speakers at the open air rally of delegates in the city park to night and if he takes a notion to du plicate the Bryan act he may sweep the delegates into shouting support of young man Denison has a remarkable acquaint ance through having deliv ered hundreds of speeches in 95 coun ties of Iowa during the last few years as orator for the Modern Woodmen and president or dersHe does not seem to be using his fraternal orders as a political as f set they stand him in good stead Just what to do with Denison is now bothering the democratic leaders who desire the nomination of Senator Ball He has been so active in his candidacy for governor that they are reluctant to set him entirely aside for his services are needed as a campaigner It is not likely that he would accept the lieutenant governorship and besides that place is desired for Bert Boies Claude Porter Dr Donald Macrae Jr of Council Bluffs C A of Sioux City or some willing to take political honors without much compensation The suggestion is now gaining support that Denison should be nominated for of state and that may be the resolution He will do anything he can to defeat the democratic party In Iowa for as soon as the party should unite and prove victorious his job as national be gone May Be Boosted Out Contrary to expectation a number of democratic leaders are willing to have the Cummins resolution introduced be fore the convention and if Lauder fails to show up with the a similar indorsement of Cummins may be drafted by someone else It is planned to have several fiery democratic orators denounce the Cummins endorsement and boot the resolution out of the convention so vig as to leave no doubt of the opposition of the Iowa democracy to Governor Cummins Inclined to Poke Progressives The democrats are also inclined to take another poke at Governor Cum mins in their tariff plank A tenta tive plank has found much favor among the delegates It is as follows THE CONVENTION PROGRAM Convention called to order by Acting Chairman C W Miller at a m sharp Invocation by Rev Father M of St Josephs Catholic church ITT Address by temporary chairman D W Hamilton of Sigourney Iowa Roll call of districts commit tees and officers Adjournment until p m Report of committee on credentials committee on permanent and Garrison bands a double delegation from Benton county and every candidate on the democratic county ticket All will wear Bryan We The Tariff plank hold that a tariff should be final solution Boom The Council Bluffs delegation arriv ed early this morning with a new can for governor in Dr Donald Mac rae Jr mayor of Council Bluffs and major surgeon of the Iowa National guards The new candidate was duly recorded on a full page of the Logan hotel register Dr Donald Mac rae mayor of Council Bluffs next gov ernor of Iowa Dr Macrae is not here yet but the Pottawattamie dele says he Is willing and they are boosting his candidacy Dr Mac levied for revenue purposes and so as to assist in producing only sufficient funds to meet the needs of an econ administered government and that to levy a tariff to benefit one at the expense of others Is a sion of the powers of government and we agree with the declaration of that republican who said the amount of graft of all insurance companies for all time will not equal of the amount of which our people are robbed every year by excessive tariffs for an excessive tariff is an invitation to form a trust enabling the capitalization therein of the continuance of the abil ity to extort in unreasonable profits Believing that our present tariff is in many of its excessive we call for immediate revision thereof that it may no longer afford a shelter to monopoly and to that end ask that steel iron lumber and coal and all badges and carry large Bryan and har mony banners The Benton delega tion is not in the interest of any can for state ticket but simply for Bryan and harmony said Mr Sells this morning I have the 500 tickets in my room now for the Benton train load to get into the convention and everyone will know that old Benton Is on hand No Party Linea in Waterloo There seem to be no party lines ia Waterloo Everyone is wearing democratic badges Julian Richards recently candidate for the republican nomination for secretary of state is resplendent in a gorgeous reception committee badge W W Miller whp headed the Cummins Blackhawk county shares honors Richards a similar badge while George E Lichty one of the Perkins managers in the republican campaign here has another of the reception badges which are the handsomest ev er seen at a state convention The local committee on arrange ments has spared no expense ts enter tain the delegates and make their vis it enjoyable and con stantly lined up at the hotel doors to take visitors on a sightseeing tour of the city or for an inspection of the coliseum to their feelings a delegation of up wards of five hundred people will be here Tuesday to do a little enthusing for democracy on their own account RALLY TONIGHT other articles controlled by trusts be placed on the free a band concert by the Cedar Falls band at p m j A DISTINGUISHED VISITOR One of the most distinguished at tendants at the democratic state con vention is Col C H Maekey of ney who presided over the first demo cratic state convention after the war which nominated Thomas H Benton for governor of Iowa Col Mackey has attended every democratic state con vention since then except one or two when prevented by illness Col Mackey served one term in the legislature and was defeated once for another term He has done valiant service if or in withstanding two congress and two for attorney he came with in 5000 votes of being elected to the atter office Besides having attended nearly state conven tion since Col al so been a delegate to several national conventions been presidential elector two or three times Who are you for for governor was asked Col Mackey Well I havent quite made up my mind he replied But from present indications I favor Senator Ball However I may find someone better before morning You know democrats never sleep he says which does democracy good and quickens the heart pulsations of its members My county will come here tomorrow in a special train five hundred strong with the Vinton and Garrison bauds and bearing a banner on which is inscribed the name of the peoples choice that peerless leader William Jennings Bryan They are mailing this demonstration to further the interests of the man they desire to see occupy the white house and hope to see him nominated to the dency in 1908 I will return to Vinton this evening and accompany the dele gation to Waterloo tomorrow The in of Hearst and Bryan are very similar and both men stand a good chance for the nomination at this tima What the sentiment of the country will be in two years no man has the power to foretell Bryan and Hearst Democrats Afte State Central Committee There may be a struggle between the Bryan and Hearst democrats a the state convention for control of th democratic state central committee which will conduct the to the national campaign in lowu The conservative democrats are now ly all lined up for Bryan while the radicals are largely for Hearst as they were in 1904 It is almost certain though that the Bryan men will con trol the state committee by a good majority Nearly every county con that has adopted resolutions at all has declared for Bryan and th state convention will give him a ring Ing indorsement for the presidency For chairman of the state central committee Charles W Miller of Wa verly Is the general choice He wil be reelected third district committee man without any opposition and thus placed in position for the chairman Mr Miller has been acting chairman or several months owing to the con at home by illness of State Chairman S B of Harlan tfr will not be able to at tend the convention either The seventh district appears to have about as lively a contest for state Committeeman as any district in the state Polk county alone has no less han four avowed candidates eeman J C Likes who wants a re election former Congressman WaltH Sutler Henry Reigelman and Harry C Evans Clint Price of Indianola is al o a candidate for the seventh district on the state committee and he s picked by many to win A R Miller of the first J F McGin y of the eighth and Thomas Kelly of he sixth are understood to be slated or reelection though National Com Walsh is said to be trying o stir up opposition to Kelly to get a Hearst man on the state committee far as known here now S W Mer er of Iowa City will also not have any for reelection J J Hughes of Council Bluffs seems ertain Chairman S B MOP of Harlan In the ninth W J urke of Missouri Valley also aspires o the ninth district seat but Hughes to necessary dele ates with him Mayor Sears Sioux City is to sue eed former Mayor J H Quick who in the eleventh district The tenth district place is conceded to Jack Dalton of Man on to succeed J B Romans of Deni on Tim Donahue of New Hampton Is on o list to take the place of Daniel of Decorah in the fourth though e may also be named for state treas urer The state central committee will continue its headquarters in Des Moines all through the campaign and it is the general understanding that former Congressman Butler will assist In the management of the ters with the new committee whether he is placed on the state committee or not Acting Chairman Miller had ored to get former Congressman Towne here to address the conven tion Mr Towne was at Ottumwa Sat but found it impossible to come to Des Moines COLISEUM PLEASES The delegates who have visited the coliseum are enthusiastic over the meeting place during the heated term Several have tried their voices on the platform with friends stationed in the part of the structure and bave been agreeably surprised with the ease and distinctness the speaker can be heard when talking in an ordi nary tone of voice It is predicted that the greatest interest will main tain on account of this one feature when the delegations are seated and the convention called to order Senator G W Bail and George Koonz of Iowa City and Thomas Lam bert of Sabula will be entertained by P Martin while in the city attend ing the democrat state convention In Receptive Mood Taking tip the present campaign he said in substance There Isan apparent wave of over the United States a new deal n public it Is not confined o any one political party as is evi by the action of the recent re publican convention in Des Moines If a majority of the republican party in Iowa will refuse railroad domination certainly the democratic party which has always been the party of the peo ple against special interests will per mit no compromise with political cor When LaFollette was nom for governor of Wisconsin the democrats bent the knee and nomina ted David Rose for governor and he was defeated by 100000 majority If the democratic party is going to win in the state or nation it must deserve to win The state convention held in Waterloo this year is but a ary to the campaign of 1908 and in order to inspire public confidence the party must take the affirmative in every act and the negative in nothing The public mind is in a receptive mood and will restore the democratic party to power In the state and nation if it acts fearlessly and sensibly both in Dominations and platform declara tions WADE IS SUPPORTING BALL Iowa For Democratic Governor Iowa City la Aug Martin J Wade of Iowa City the only dem congressman from this state in years stated emphatically Saturday that he would not accept the nomina tion for governor Although it is known that the democracy of Iowa is eager to offer the Iowa City jurist the honor he declares that his busi ness affairs and those of others in his charge
