unfortunate in obtaining un willing control of insane persons The case of George Berry the maniac re cently sent to Independence after hav ing been kept at police headquarters is still fresh in the minds of local res Today there is incarcerated at police headquarters an individual who if he is not prove an important witness in the case which he detailed to the officers this morn ing The fact he told so startling a story led to believe insane The young man in question gave the name of Pearl Berry He was taken from the blind baggage of train No 1 on the Illinois Central railroad this morning and escorted to the police sta tion by Officer Charles Dahl En route to the station Berry told the officer that he was foolish for wasting time with him as there had been a foul mur der committed near this city a time before the arrival of the train and he Berry was a witness Intended Putting on Amateur Performance in Waterloo Exciting Chase After Thespian Last Night Which Ended Witnesses Galore in Police Court Today Testified Against Him From Thursdays Daily It was with a dramatic air that Prof G W McKown stalked into police court this morning and bowed to numerous friends who were lying in wait to testify against him He seated himself in the prisoners box scowled at Judge Martin and grasping the ends of a fierce Italian mustachio silently signified that he was ready for the court to proceed The pro was informed that he wanted on the charge of having de several local business men and caught attempting to escape to Chicago With a great show of defiance and an air of injured pride McKown replied he had defrauded no one never intended to and was about to proceed with innumerable excuses when the court informed him that he might plead guilty or not guilty as no red tape was permissible this morning He pleaded not guilty with every in dication of haste and Police Chief Simmerling immediately lined up a cal band will attempt to carry on prep for the performance of The the situation SHOT HIM BY MISTAKE Hotelkeeper Fires Rath Shot 10 Anger Boone March Meredith was shot Wednesday afternoon by Proprietor Charles C Kirk of Northwestern hotel He will recover Several of given away on the night of the per which were scheduled for Browns opera house He secured two watches several days ago and yester day returned and after securing the third requested that he be allowed two rings The entire assortment he claimed was to be exhibited to mem bers of the band at a rehearsal last evening The jewelers objected to allowing the stranger so large an amount of valuables without payment and upon mentioning it to were promptly presented with a check drawn on the Security Savings bank to cover the amount of the jewelry Caught at Oelwein Mr Fessler a member of the firm the factory ol the Waterloo company a con was made to a hydrant on the corner of Bast Third and Sycamore streets but no water could be ob This difficulty led Fire Chief Dunham to make an official tion of the existing conditions and the inspection commenced the same day and is still in progress On Tuesday Chief Dunham in com pany with a fireman from each side ofthe river forty hy on both sides of the river and out of that number found it ble to obtain water from sixteen 8 on either side of the river Yesterday almost the entire day was devoted to the work Forty were tested on the west side and only two found in bad order The east side diJ not make as a Fortyone were out of which number 13 were found The majority of that are out of order are located near the business center and those in the vi of Franklin Mulberry and La are said to be giving more trouble than those near the out skirts The water works company was informed of the situation and they are pouring hot water and throwing salt in the hydrants in an effort to eliminate the difficulty The danger is is thought can be eradicated within a few fays MacMahon a brother of the dead man and wealthy can scarcely be attribut ed to a Martin disposed of the case this morning by sentencing the traveling actor to thirty days In the county jail The grand jury will con vene on Monday and several facts in the episode will be presented to them for investigation Meanwhile the lo WERE FRIGHTENED BY SMOKE Fire Department Called by Telephone to Residence on Lincoln Street A telephone message at oclock last evening summoned the fire depart ment to the residence of John Kalten bach on Lincoln street The high wind it appears had driven the smoke into the dwelling until it had ap of being on fire Without waiting to make a full funeral at which friends may attend at the cemetery I is probable that the remains may be so arranged the attendance at tte grave will be permitted Mrs H L Pierce Died of Typhoid Fever Today Noon Mrs H L Pierce died at 12 oclock today at her home 417 West Park ave nue of typhoid fever after a lasting only Saturday She wa a young lady and leaves her husband and two small children Mr Pierce is a
