Brethren Consecrate Their New House of Building Expenses Provided for by Wood from Monday's Dally Last night at about the new Brethren church was dedicated after ample provision had been made to meet all the obligations incurred in its erection and furnishing The tory service was simple but impressive Is consisted of the prayer of tion offered by Rev J Allan Miller of president of Ashland college Ashland Ohio Thus closed a day which will be a memorable one in the history of the Progressive Brethren church in this city as it marked the of hopes long cherished that some day they would have a church home of their own Three services were held during the day at each of which the house was well filled The first was at 11 a m when a powerful and interesting sermon was preached by Dr Miller from the text found in Hebrews 7th chapter verses 1 and 26 Among other things the preacher Christ in the scriptures is represented as fulfilling a three fold office namely prophet priest and king This is the historical order of representing these functions We receive Him first in the capacity of a prophet He is the ideal of all the Old Testament in- of will A prophet is one who becomes the voice for com- some will of God to the mind and hearts of men Man has ever sought instruction and longed for light His soul hanger con- sumes him in that unguided and un- enlightened from God he falls DOW as ever in the path into a thousand errors in his for God Heathen oracles brought no message of light and life to him and phy was impotent to satisfy his cravings Plato We must wait until one must teach us how to conduct ourselves toward the gods Moses came a prophet est rank and he revealed and inter- the will of God to men And so wondrous was the outgrowth of his teaching that the tribes to whom he spoke became the nation destined to be the moral teacher of the earth Like unto Moses as a teacher and interpreter of God's will is Christ He came from the of the Father and declared Him n all His relations toward man He is manifestation of God's character Jesus Christ we have the perfect and final revelation of God to men spoke as a faithful servant but Jesus Christ sneaks with the authority of a son No Hebrew prophet no king no heaven sent ministering spirit unto this prophet in his message to the world Having received Jesus Christ as an authoritative teacher one sent from God speaking from heaven we are led on to accept him as our high priest becomes of necessity onr day's man our go between onr Christ Priesthood rests fundamentally upon and true human needs Naturally the human mind shrinks roni the word priest as it has een thought of in connection with servants But the soul recognizes the and majesty and infinite power of God It is equally cognizant of its own weakness sinfulness and worthiness Every man has deey needs which he believes God can supply God is unapproachable in His less However some men who are ter than others dare approach Him to plead their own cause They succeed or God hears them They are by others less bold to plead for Thus priests arose The iion of priesthood is essentially service service in behalf of others Its basis ies in sympathy a sympathy strong or the needy the sinful the lost vice for men expressed in intercession with God Jesus Christ is y such a high priest At last though he never ceases to be be prophet of God speaking to us as hough he never for a moment leaves he most holy place in the heavens where as our ever living high priest he intercedes for last to our in- joy he sits enthroned a king ind this is his highest and ion Oh let us never to hear lis messages and to plead His sacrifice until in our conscious experience we know and recognize Him as king also Thirty-eight times in the New ment is He explicitly called a king One hundred and forty times does the New Testament mention the Kingdom Its final triumph is tbe consummation of the age Submission to Christ characterizes the first act and the whole action of the spiritual life Obedience to a person is the essence of Christianity Following the sermon a statement was made by the building committee of the cost of the building and the debt incurred for which no provision had yet been made The total coat of the building of furnace and some other items which had been provided for by special donations was Pledges had been secured to dedication to the amount of 45 leaving nearly to be raised in order to dedicate the clear of debt on i
