No 118 pay tribute to heritage By ASHLEY MATTHEWS SEGUIN paid trib ute to Texas heritage Wednesday taking a moment to toast its heroes on the anniversary of the signing of its Declaration of Independence in 1836 Citizens gathered to toast the state with pure Texas spring water and remember those who made sacrifices to secure its independence Its so important to tell the sto ries of our history over and over said Seguin Mayor Betty Ann Matthies Its wonderful for people in Texas to remember how their home became a republic The people who declared Texas inde from Mexico made so many sacrifices and we should honor Edmund Kuempel Texas State Representative served as the pro grams master of ceremonies This program is important because it allows us to reflect back on people who fought and died to make us Kuempel said Texas is the greatest state in the nation and Serving Seguin and Guadalupe County since 1888 Daily Sunday TOAST TO TEXAS STANDING GUARD Members of the Seguin High School Navy Junior ROTC post the colors at Toast to Texas where citizens of Seguin paid tribute to Texas history by toasting spring water on the anniversary of the states independence the United States is the greatest nation in the world We must remem ber those who paved the way for Local students also got involved in the program Four Seguin High School Navy Junior ROTC students posted the colors while the Navarro Elementary Fourth Grade Choir sang patriotic music Nora Naumann chairman of the Toast to Texas committee said this years program was a success The ceremony was Naumann said The rain stopped just in time and we were so happy This is one of the programs that helped to put Seguin on the TOAST Page 2 Election races in western Guadalupe County heating up By STEVE GORDON GUADALUPE COUNTY There will be several seats including the mayoral position and two council seats up for reelection May 7 in both Marion and Cibolo The filing period expires at 5 Monday March 7 but is extended an additional five days for candidates In Marion Mayor Glen A Hild will be running for reelection along with council members Belinda Reason who filled out the remaining term of Margie Reinhard and Clarence Jackson Each council and mayoral term is two years I have contemplated the idea of Ruppert Hild running Jackson said And I believe that I will do so 1 still feel that I can be of service to this community and help it to continue in the direction that it is currently going As for Marion Mayor Glen Hild his services are available to the com munity should they desire him to con to be mayor I would be willing to offer my services to the people of Marion if they so insist on Hild said As a city I think we are doing fine We are paying off a longterm debt right now and I am very pleased with the job city staff is doing currently I do want to work on drainage issues over the next couple of years though because of the fact that we are surrounded by two creeks So we will want to improve that as soon as we can In Cibolo the drainage system is not on the minds of Mayor Charles Ruppert and councilors Susan Gray Place 3 and Johnny Sutton place who are all up for reelection to the city I have not officially made up my mind if I am going to run again for Ruppert said I am still mulling over my options and trying to decide what is best for me at this cur rent time I will have a firm answer to give to the city next While Ruppert is sitting on the Sutton has filed to run for the office of mayor in Cibolo and Gary Kelly former Cibolo planning and zoning chairman has filed for the Place 2 seat in Cibolo I am not big on campaigning Sutton who owns his own general contracting business in Cibolo said I am going to rely on my reputation and do a lot of walking in neighborhoods dents a way to develop skills and discipline Note The following is the third in a series on Texas Public Schools Week By JANET GRAFE SEGUIN In her spare time Sheila Lucas serves coffee to Sandra Bullock and Toby Jones and cleans up after Houston gets hit by tsunamis She did this recently while playing a waitress in the movie Every Word is and acting in a docudrama called Oil For her day job Lucas teaches the ater arts to Seguin High School stu dents She started teaching seven years ago and was amazed by the stt dents talents for singing acting and dancing She was also amazed by the rudeness of some of the students I dont cope with Lucas said I send them out of the room until they are ready to come back and Theater arts is an area where stu dents can apply their reading writing and knowledge of history to acting a part Students today are visual learn ers Lucas said so theater arts is an exciting way for students to take what they know and bring it to life get on stage and Reason the its amaz how quickly they get Lucas said Putting on a performance teaches responsibility and learning to work together They have to interact with everybody in a group situation and take a problem and make it Lucas said The communication skills they learn make it worth taking the Whether playing an instrument in the band singing in the choir or put ting on a play students learn if they dont practice enough they mess up their part which throws everyone else off There are a lot of natural consequences for not being prepared and a lot of satisfaction when every thing goes well Its a wonderful teaching Lucas said There is lots of research showing that students taking fine arts classes perform better in SCHOOLS Page 2 Police given special class HIGH ACCLAIM Veteran officers praise controlled force training By BRYAN KIRK SEGUIN Members of the Seguin Police Department got the chance last week to enhance their defensive tactics through a spe cial class offered through Fighting Systems Don Roberts who has been teaching con trolled force since 1990 walked from one pair of officers to another as they attempted to master the techniques Roberts had shown them Roberts the director of controlled force for Fighting Systems is still a licensed peace officer in the state of Louisiana Roberts is a former golden gloves boxer who has also trained in martial arts with a friend That friend teamed with Roberts in 1990 and began doing research on the difficulties police officers throughout the United States encounter when they are in the field The research was not done until Roberts said began presenting the program to police departments nationwide that same year Were at 42 police departments right Roberts said We train military person nel federal personnel and law enforcement Roberts brought props such as rubber knives pliable billy clubs and yellow plastic guns that allowed the officers to learn how to better protect themselves and the public Seguin Police Chief Luis Collazo watched some of the training last week with Sheriff Arnold Zwicke Collazo said he heard about the program from one of his newest officers Officer Jason Stan Stanzione who is also an process for the states troubled child and adult protective services agencies add caseworker training and increase cooperation with law enforcement Lawmakers and Gov Rick Perry have made reform of the
