Bryan Editors Nate This is the first in a serfes focusing on the 2005 Guadalupe County Show By BRYAN KIRK kids are putting the finishing touches on their entries this weekend in preparation for the 40th Annual Guadalupe County Youth Show More than 500 from around the region will participate in this years Youth Show and many of them entered more than one project We have entries and some of the kids have two or three said Becky Baker whose husband Ronnie serves as the events vice chair man The youth show will be held at the Guadalupe County Fairgrounds Jan 1922 Entries are down slightly from last year with entries in the youth show in 2004 The lower number is reflected in the livestock Last year there were total livestock entries This year the num ber of livestock is down slightly to 957 while homemaking entries are up slightly with 272 entries compared with 252 last year Despite the lower number of live stock entries Sylvia Kelso who serves as youth show secretary with Mildred said participation is still about average among the area youth We are certainly not concerned about it at Kelso said Youth shows of the past served as teaching tools for a community that was largely agricultural Today the same still rings but the youth show also serves another important purpose YOUTH SHOW Page 2A Morawietz Court seeks team to build JP 4 building AWAITED ACTION County expects to have facility built by early summer By BRYAN KIRK SEGUIN County Commissioners voted 50 Friday to seek a team to construct the proposed Justice of Peace courthouse for Justice of the Peace Larry Morawietz Commissioners dis cussed the last week but decided to take no action because an inde pendent engineer had not yet been appointed County Commissioner Judy Cope who brought the concern to the court Jan 3 asked the court again to consider waiting a little longer We cant go out for this until we have an inde pendent architect or she said Marty Garza of the Koehler Company told commissioners having an engineer independent of the process is not a requirement but one that is often used to ensure the specifications of the proposed project are followed COURT Page 2A Red Cross gets donation IN common They are a few of the local organizations funded in part by the Guadalupe County United Way These community service organ are in better shape this month thanks to MiniGrip Zip Pak The ITW Foundation which is part of parent company matched employees contributions for a donation of more than Bake sales Frito pie sales raffles and con tests encouraged employees to contribute Four supervisors agreed to wear German lederhosen to work for a day if the teams met their goals Moser said The supervisors not only dressed in the German costumes but also showed off their dancing and people gathered for this weekends Martin Luther King Day events which included a historical fashion show and a Taste Tea Friday nights fashion show offered viewers a peek into the past of African Americans and a look at todays favorite fashions in America Africa and the Caribbean Inspirational readings and poems intermingled with skits and even a perform ance of steppin a rhyth mic dance with African roots We want the offered participants the chance to com mune as they tasted traditional soul food dishes including meats vegetables candy and cakes These foods are part of our cul ture our h e r community to understand the meaning of Dr Martin Luther Kings said Mary Crunk member of the Martin Luther King Planning Committee This is a peaceful move ment and were here to have fun and spend time with each other and reflect on the past present and our The show touched on many aspects of African American life in America from times of physical social and financial oppression to todays childrens pajama parties and mens Afro hairstyles Bright Caribbean fashions and beau African dresses flanked those of yesteryear when African American women wore bonnets and long dresses The program also recognized 10 Seguin High School students who in a Martin Luther King poster making contest Sophomore Dave Rodriguez won first place Cory Tipton won second for poster which featured a poem titled The Man Inside a Dream and freshman Katrina Cole won 3rd place The Taste Tea on Saturday morning said Jewel t Lewis Martin Luther King Planning Committee member Soul food includes special dishes of
