Republican nomination for Guadalupe County Sher iff in a runoff with challenger Tom Tannehill Harborth will face Democratic date Juan Johnny Garcia in the November general election Harborth received 1327 votes or percent to votes or percent in the complete but unofficial count Of the countys registered voters only cast their ballots in the lican primary and 416 in the Democratic primary The results were there but not that many people Harborth said of Tuesdays results My opponent worked very hard He really got out there and put some time and effort to get elected This was a pretty tough the sheriff added never had mis many opponents I appreciate the people who worked for me Tannehill said he was disappointed that I lost but I must congratulate the sher iff on his win I see it as a congressman to be ousted this year losing in a runoff to former Libertarian pres candidate Ron Paul In another upset Cinderella candidate Victor Morales cap tured the Democratic nomination in Texas Senate runoff and will face Republican Phil Gramm in November A high school government teacher who began his campaign with in savings Morales narrowly defeated Rep John Bryant of Dallas a House his 1992 pickup during the campaign By TERESA L THOMPSON Staff Writer The Seguin Independent School District approved a super intendent employment agreement with incoming super intendent Dee Carter Tuesday night The trustees and Carter agreed upon a contract with a term of three years and one month effec tive from June to June 30 1999 with an annual salary of Carter former Assistant super intendent of curriculum and instruction for the Seguin ISD said she is looking forward to returning to the district I am delighted tonight to have the contract ratified by the she said Ive been spending some days in the dis talking with staff going up the learning curve and catching up with all of the good things that have been happening in the last three years there are so many of those So Im just prepar ing myself mentally and learning as much as I can to get ready to jump in on June In other action the board vot ed not to apply through the states LoneSTAR program sponsored by the State Energy Conservation Office in order to retrofit HVAC systems at Jefferson and Ball Ele mentary Schools The proposal was prepared by trustee Paul Soto who explained that STAR stands for Save Taxes And The program would provide an engineering site sur vey at a cost of to the district payable Soto said out of the current energy conservation budget At the completion of the survey which would provide drawings and specifications the district could decide whether or not to apply for the loan Soto noted the airconditioning sys tems at Jefferson and Ball are old and lack energy efficiency Trustee DeLois Garrett stated however that the district is already too much in debt to pur sue the plan Interim Superintendent Ronald Heine meyer agreed that because of the districts existing indebtedness he did not think it would be ien to the budget The motion was defeated in a split decision with trustees Louis Q Reyes HI Albert Menn and Soto voting to approve the sur vey and Stella Rico Nancy Ewald president Pat Irvine and Garrett voting against the motion This does not mean that the program at a later just that they will not do it at this tune In other business the board approved the lighting retrofit at Patlan and Koennecke Elementary Schools The low bid for the pro ject in the amount of came from Advanced Lighting Ser vices Inc of Seguin The retrofit is being done because state require ments have changed since the schools were built in 1986 Ewald noted Heinemeyer added mat the retrofit will reduce energy used at the schools while producing the same amount of assault of child A boy has been charged with sexual assault of a child a as the result of his alleged assault on a local 6 yearold girl according to authorities at the Guadalupe County Sheriffs Office and the Guadalupe County Juvenile Detention Center Harry Marek chief juvenile probation officer said the boy a ward of the state of California where his mother resides is being held at the Lockhart juvenile detention facility According to sheriffs office chief investigator Larry Maraw ietz the victim told her mother what had happened and the mother then contacted the sher office The suspect has reportedly made a written state ment confessing to the assault Marek explained that within the next 10 days the boy will be given a psychological evaluation and will appear at another deten tion hearing The victim is in San Antonio undergoing tests to determine whether she has been infected with any sexually transmitted diseases Authorities confirmed the boy is a relative of the victim but could not provide any further details at this time City Cleanup Day scheduled Saturday The City of Seguin has scheduled a city wide Cleanup Day for Saturday April 13 between the hours of 9 and 2
