Lehmann has accepted the job of superintendent of the Wesla co ISO He is expected to tender his resignation during tonights board meeting Located in the Valley just miles from the Rio Grande Weslaco has a population of The city is along Hwy 83 which links McAl len and Harlingen centralized in the winter mecca of Texas and is a gateway to Mexico The citys economy is based on food processing agribusiness clo thing manufacturing and steel fabrication The Weslaco ISO is a school district with approximately students nearly double the size of Seguin ISO Its high school has over students Lehmann succeeds Dr Roy C who was named execu tive director of the Region 13 Ser vice Center The post of dent has been vacant since July Lehmann became superintendent in Seguin in 1986 coming here from the Houston ISD where he was executive manager in the effec tive schools and dropout programs His contract as superintendent here runs into the spring of 1995 In 19841985 he served under Dr Tom Anderson at the Texas Education Agency and prior to that was executive deputy About 300 voters per day casting an early ballot Turnout has averaged almost 300 voters per day through the first four days of early voting for the Nov 3 general election When polling places closed Mon day the total stood at which included 862 ballots cast at the elec tion office in Seguin and 323 at the Scherlz location Mondays turnout of 345 voters was the highest singleday total so far and most of the increase occurred at the county election office where 273 ballots were cast The turnout on Monday dipped slightly to 72 down from the first three days totals of 83 on Wednesday 85 on Thursday and 83 on Friday In Seguin the turnout has aver aged about 215 voters per day rang ing from last Wednesdays low of 157 up to 273 on Monday Thurs days turnout totaled 231 and Fri days was 201 Early voting continues today at both locations Hours of operation are 8 to 5 at the election office located on the ground floor of the Guadalupe County Administration Building 307 W in Seguin At the Schertz polling place staffed by only one election worker hours are shorter and the office closes for lunch Voting is con ducted from to 1 and from 2 to at the Housing Authority office 204 Schertz Parkway A third early voting location will be added this weekend when voting will be conducted at WalMart 1500 E Court The WalMart polling place will be open from 1 to 8 Friday and Saturday Oct 2324 and Thursday and Friday Oct 2930 Resident helps deputy recover stolen vehicle A Guadalupe County sheriffs deputy recovered a stolen 1990 GMC van early Sunday morning A resident of Blue Creek Road in the rural La Vernia area of south western Guadalupe County phoned the sheriffs office at Saturday and deputies John Graham and Rickie Letbetter were dis patched to investigate They met the caller at his residence The man told them that at about that night he had seen a van traveling on Blue Creek Road at a high rate of speed The van did several doughnuts in the road and then it appeared as though the occupants were attempting to abandon the Graham wrote in his report on the case At that time the man came out of his house When the vans ants saw him they left the area He followed he van as it traveled south on Farm Road 467 Approximately one mile south of Blue Creek Road the van left the roadway traveled through a fence the van and walked back to the roadway A short time later an unidentified veh icle stopped and picked up the Graham said The man described the vans location and Graham went to look for it He found the abandoned cle in a wooded area on the north side of Farm Road 467 mately one mile south of Blue Creek The van had sustained a substan tial amount of body damage because of the terrain and the way it was driven Graham said The steering column had been broken as well as the sliding door He said it appeared as though the van had contained a small television set and some speakers which had been removed Also the stereo was damaged as though there had been an attempt to remove it The vehicle was described as a white 1990 GMC Safari XT van registered to a resident of the 9000 block of Lane in San Antonio Theft of the van had been reported to the San Antonio Police Department 2 3 4 5 6 dent for the Houston ISD Previously he had served as superintendent of the Eagle Pass ISD from 19791982 He had started his education career there in 1967 as a teacher After serving in the Air Force in the late 60s he returned to Texas in 1969 and was associated with the Fort Worth ISD in several positions including director of bil education In 1972 he earned his masters degree in education from North Texas State University He has since completed course work for his doctorate from the Universi ty of Texas Austin Milestones during the Lchmann administration in Seguin include extensive of the Seguin schools advancement and infusion of technology securing various federal and state grants such as Even Start the parenting prog ram and a Title VII grant which brought the labor at the kindergarten campuses and STARS countywide coopera tive school within a school program for the nontraditional high school developing a community based strategic plan for the schools and a dual participation college cre dit program involving Texas Luthe ran College He also paired elementary schools to focus curriculum and to gain ethnic balance A reflection of his leadership the 19881990 SISD board of trustees was recognized in September 1990 by the Texas Association of School Administrators as Outstanding School Board in the state of Texas Lehmann and his wife Angie a teacher have three children The oldest daughter Jennifer an SHS honor grad is a junior at James is a senior at SHS while Michael is a freshman Lehmann is expected to begin his duties Dec 1 in Weslaco The Seguin school board met in retreat session Sunday to do some preliminary planning as to hiring a new superintendent An interim superintendent is expected to be hired with that decision to be made possibly as early as tonights board meeting Homecoming court THE HOMECOMING KING AND QUEEN at Texas Lutheran College discuss con struction of the hospitals new inten sive care unit Administrator Don Richey will update the board on progress of the ICU in 92 fundraising drive and the agenda also calls for reports on Richeys presentations to county commissioners and the City Council Guadalupe County commission ers on Friday gave the goahead for the project and Richey was sche to make a presentation to the Seguin City Council today The board also is expected to discuss groundbreaking nies for the ICU project The agenda also calls for the hos pital board to make 20 appointments and reappointments to the medical honorary staff of the hospital Marion City Hall to close for half hour a day i By Scot Kibbe Correspondent MARION The Marion City Council authorized a daily lunch break for City Hall employees at its meeting Monday night The council decided that City Hall will be closed from to noon each day so employees can eat lunch This will begin Nov 1 Mayor Glenn Hild said he felt that City Hall employees deserve a real lunch Hild said the time chosen is best because local resi dents already have adjusted their schedules to the Marion Post Office closing from 11 to noon Also the council approved the purchase ot a new computer for City Hall on the recommendation of Public Works Superintendent David Rohrbach According to Rohrbach one of the two computers at City Hall is near its memory capacity He said it would be a better long term investment to buy a new computer and printer rather than upgrade the memory of the old computer Hild said the money for the com puter should be covered by money in the general and revenue funds set aside for equipment He expects the new computer to cost between andI In addition the council passed a water resolution which had been discussed at earlier meetings The resolution is aimed at the Texas Legislature and regards its handling of the Edwards Aquifer during its next regular session The resolution calls for Guada lupe County to be included in any Edwards plan previous water trans port limits to be abolished and expresses general support for the efforts of the Texas Water Commis sion to regulate the aquifer It also confirms the county judge as spokesman for Marion on these issues and calls for a regulatory authority to be established in the Edwards region We must be heard as one large voice in Austin when the legislature Hild said MATHER
