his Paris hospital bed film and television star Rock Hudson decided to go public with the news that he is suffering from the usually deadly disease AIDS says his spokeswoman Collart who also is a per sonal friend of Hudson said Thur that he had been diagnosed more than a year ago as having AIDS acquired immune deficiency syndrome Doctors at the American Hospital of Paris also have discovered liver abnormalities that have not yet been diagnosed she said The imposing stature strong presence and good looks made him a natural choice to star opposite some of Hollywoods leading ladies in an acting career that began in 1948 and included more than 50 epics dramas Westerns and comedies He decided to make it Miss Collart told The Associated Press I think what he did today shows what kind of person he Miss Collart said Hudson reviewed a statement on his condition with her in his hospital room before she read it to reporters The disease is most likely to afflict homosexuals abusers of injectable drugs and hemophiliacs It ap is spread by sexual contact contaminated needles and blood transfusions but not by casual contact AIDS is an affliction in which the bodys immune system becomes unable to resist disease AIDS can go into remission but there is no known cure Asked if Hudson knew how he contracted the disease Miss Collart said He doesnt have any idea of how he contracted AIDS Nobody around him has Doctors say French drug is no cure AP Science Editor NEW YORK AP American doctors say an experimental AIDS drug being tested in France is no better than drugs under investigation in the United States even though many American AIDS patients have gone to France for treatment On Thursday Rock Beverly Hills Calif doctor Rexford Kennamer said Hudson had seen doctors at the Pasteur Institute in Paris which has been treating American AIDS victims Ron Najman spokesman for the National Gay Task Force in New York said that at least 15 Americans are being treated for AIDS at the Pasteur Institute and that many other Americans have gone there for treatment and returned Dr Samuel Broder chief of the clinical oncology program of the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda said Thursday that two drugs including the French drug can reduce the amount of AIDS virus in the bloodstream of patients but cannot consistently improve patients health Broder a specialist on ex AIDS treatments said he was not familiar with case and could not comment on it Dr Anthony Fauci director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases in Bethesda said the French drug HPA 23 may have more dangerous side ef than a drug Fauci is studying called suramin 4 There really is no indication at all that it HPA 23 is any better and its considerably more toxic theres no question about he said HPA 23 causes a drop in the levels of blood cells called platelets which in turn can lead to bleeding disorders he said HPA 23 is not yet available for human tests in the United States Broder said In February Jean Claude Cher mann of Pasteur one of the drugs developers reported in New York that the drug had caused the AIDS virus to nearly disappear in the blood of a young hemophiliac emphasized that the drug does not kill the AIDS virus nor can it be called in any sense a cure Researchers in France have not said whether Hudson is receiving the drug Broder said some 40
