terrible storm of Monday and Tuesday was one of the most severe ever experienced on the Lakes The nft did not leave this port but tied tip and awaited the abatement of the storm The gale was the heaviest ever recorded at the Marquette signal station Beginning with a 30mile from the southeast it shifted to the west and from midnight Sunday averaged a velocity of 30 miles an hour at the station or 38 on the open lake Four times the wind reached a velocity of 42 miles at the station or 50 on the lake the highest velocity ever reached at that station It was the heaviest long continued gale from one direction ever known there Tiie S S i A Official Ton need not 4 it nor quietly j talk about it but with err inform that next Monday the regular trains will run from Marquette to the Sault Sails dont amount to much without trains The rails we have had and now comes the greatest boon we have yet received regular A railroad officials arrived on Tuesday to make the arrangements look ever the ground arid estimate our needs The party consisted of Andrew Wat son general superintendent Wm Orr general freight agent E W general passenger agent S C Brown superintendent of agencies of the American express company C H Watson general road master S B Fleeter train master and Mr American express agent at Marquette To a representative of the DEMOCRAT the that their purpose in visiting the Sault at this time was to make the necessary arrangements for the running of regular trains and that the first train would be put on Monday They appreciated that their terminal facilities for the present will be limited but they well know that the people here are willing to put up with in order to be able to get in and out of the Sault at any time and with fixed regularity For the present a temporary depot is being erected about forty rods this side of the round house and this will be used until the Union depot is built In turn the inquisitive reporter quizzed each official that no news might escape Mr Watson the general answer to the question how is the road bed and has the work been ad as you expected replied that the work here is further advanced than he had anticip ated the turn table is ready for use and the water tank and well are far enough advanced so that California Lost The Canadian passenger propeller California left Chicago Saturday night at 10 oclock with a full
