that j Ste Marie lies at the apes of a triangle the sides of which lying along the southern coast of Lake Superior and along the northern coast of Lake Michigan when continued embrace all the wheat and grazing country of the northwest From this great wheat and agricultural empire there are three possible railway transportation lines the northern north of the great lakes the Canadian Pacific the central by the way of the Soo and the south ern via Chicago and Detroit Of these the Sault has the advantage of being about 300 miles shorter from the center of the wheat country to Boston and about 200 miles shorter to New York being the nearest shortest and only possible route for railroads to get east between the latitudes of Chicago and Port Arthur It must also be borne in mind that all the water transportation business must pass through here as the 3t Marys river is the only outlet of Lake Superior In front of the town the river narrows and pours an im mense volume of water over the rapids the fall of which is about 20 feet At the rapids is the great United States ship canal and locks through which passes a greater number of vessels and larger tonnage than any other ship ca nal in the world There were passed through the locks in 1SS6 vessels of tons burden this tonnage being worth This canal is olo feet long 80 feet wide in the chamber and 60 feet at the gates From the bottom to the coping is 3912 feet and at the upper gate there is feet of water on the sill allowing vessels to pass drawing that much To fill the lock requires gallons and it takes about 10 minutes The cost of constructing this work and its ap was about Yet this lock is not sufficient to accom the growing shipping interests of the great lakes as the channel is too shallow and the chamber too small for the great propellers and vessels that are to carry the grain and other freight to and from the north west GOVERNMENT IMPROVEMENTS Work has already begun at a new lock the dimensions of which wiH be 800 feet In length 100 feet both at the gates and iu the chamber and it will al ow the passage of vessels drawing 20 feet of water Estimates made show that it will require the expenditure of at least to construct this which when completed will be alled by any work of its kind of ancient or modern architecture To build the required about 7 t is possible that the present one can be built in two or three and there is about to assemble here a great conven tion nf representatives of the Boards of Trade the shipping and all the great business interests of the cities of the lakes and of the northwest to urge the immediate conclusion of the work The corps of engineers of the United States have representatives present and all the congressmen have been invited numbers of whom will The congressmen have been especial invited with the intention of showing them the great demand and necessity of enlarging the capacity of the locks The government is also dredging and dynamiting a new chan nel into and through Hay Lake which when completed will be about 20 miles shorter than the present water channel aud it will be infinitely preferable as it will be lighted by electric lights and navigable at night the present one be ing only available by daylight These works will cost several millions and yet they do not represent all nor the end of the government expenditure because on account of its situation the town is of immense importance as a point of military defense The government has recently bought 80 acres for a site of a new fort the present Fort Brady being in an incommodious and inconvenient location both as regards the interests of the government and the town On these eighty acres it is intended that heavy and permanent fortifica tions and barracks be erected and kept in order To do all the labor of con the ship canal and locks the Hay Lake channel and the new fort will demand men and money but the United States government happily lacks neither INTERNATIONAL RAILWAY BRIDGE the village limits at the only possible place for a railroad bridge be tween the vicinity of Detroit and Du luth there is now being constructed a great tramway by a syndicate composed of the Canadian Pacific and the Grand Trunk of Canada and the Duluth South Shore Atlantic and the Minneapolis Sault Ste Marie and Atlantic of the TJ all of which railroads will reach the town this fall The Duluth South Shore Atlantic is a consolidation of the Detroit Mackinac Marquette and a number of smaller iron and cop per mining roads These have been bought by syndicate of Chicago with whom are interested heavy capitalists of New York Over this line the Northern Pa will enter the town and for the present several others of the great trunk lines of the northwest The Minneapolis Sault Ste Marie Atlan tic is being built by the Washbum syn of Minneapolis and other cap as the eastern connection of a road they control west of Minneapolis This syndicate is interested in land here Besides these the Chicago Mil waukee and St Paul the Chicago Northwestern the La Crosse road and the Grand Indiana are either making arrangements to build or to have connections through here to the east as rapidly as possible In fact all the great railroads of the northwest have to get the Soo or get out of busi ness While from the the Canadian and Grand is being built a road from Boston as di rect as possible This will run through extensive coal fields that have been obtained by the syndicate which is building it The Soo is the terminus of all the lines as here the United States ends Over the river Canada begins The building of these lines will not alone unexceptionable facilities for shipping by rail as al ready the best facilities are offered to ship by but the Duluth and Minneapolis roads own large tracts at the west end of the town where elevators for storing and transferring grain will be built Ex tensive coal and other docks will be First Union Depot will be located the car shops for repairs will be built and all the round houses switch yards and buildings connected with the terminus of two great trans continental trunk lines WATER POWER In order to utilize the immense wa ter power that is now running to waste over the rapids the construction of a water power canal is being en This canal is to be cut about 100 ft wide and 8 to 15 feet deep for a distance of 3 miles Col Ruger the eminent civil engineer is now survey ing and drawing plans for its con struction The head will be at thei west end of the town where will be built large and costly locks and gates for the control of the most valuable water supply in the world At the j lower end suitable outlets will be proj vided on both sides on the north the waste water will be emptied into the St Marys river on the south into the Mission creek so that all possible ad vantage will be taken of the supply The construction of this canal and its inlets outlets and accessories will cost over a million dollars aud will give em ployment to thousands of men These will be masons helpers laborers car penters engineers men contractors clerks assistants and all the employees connected with one ot the greatest engineering works of the Limes It will be pushed night and day by those who have unlimited command of money ability and experience Mill sites have already been selected by those who intend to be the first to have mills completed It will not alone be flouting mills which will find a place on the of the canal but paper mills furniture factories iron rol ling mills ana other extensive manu factories For here is the center of great poplar and hardwood forests and we are in the line of shipment of ore from the great hematite ore beds of the and ranges The power is practically unlimited The engineer giving as his opinion that there will be more power than there will be room for mills The completion of this will be celebrated as the assur ance of the largest manufacturing city of the northwest CANAL SYNDICATE The syndicate who are building the canal have bought in and in the vicin ity of this place acres of iand costing them over Their largest purchase in one body was 40 acres the old Methodist Mission tract laying where the mouth of the ca nal will be which cost them This syndicate ara of course the heaviest investors and will do the most to build up X Adams Mr Wm M Ever ett of Petoskey and myself This syndicate whose land now represents a value of about intends that as much more be invested in improve ments They will clear the land which is probably the most beautiful in Mich igan grade the streets lay sidewalks and erect buildings They with others have offered to give 2K right of way to the centre of the city 5 acres for depot and 20 for car shop grounds to the Minneapolis road if it will locate its line through this tract If tha Minneapolis road should not see fit to accept this proposition there is another larger corporation awaiting admittance to our city They have made ions to the street car company to have a line of street cars running through the property either this fall or early next spring They will give a block of land for a public park if the city will keep it in order and will grant the site for a school as soon as the will agree to erect a good building They have made application for wat er mains in the principle streets and for sewers if possible all the contracts for grading and improving the 12 miles of streets have been let and numbers of men are now at work Some idea of the size of the ing can
