James Boyce Betty and Ted Swindle Tips for mailing The outdoor science tion program of Oakhurst High School has drawn national recognition again this time from the Knowledgeable Action to Restore our Environment Matthew H Rickey tor of KARE in a letter to James Boyce head of the science department of the school called the program one of the most successful ever initiated This is especially noteworthy since over 210 local schools throughout the country have received ing and conducted programs since Hickey said Hickey cited the program for excellence in site community ment and orientation toward real environmental concerns Additionally we commend your program for providing down and dirty learning activities and for ting to in conservation education and nature Hickey said The outdoor program is conducted in a gully which is comprised of five acres It is currently known as the gully but university students who have studied there call it Fern Canyon and the old timers know it as the bluff The certificate of adoption which was presented to Boyce with Hickey's letter is one of three national awards the program has already has also received numerous state It can be considered as a part of the remains of the Big Thicket of East Texas It contains giant magnolias over 250 years old giant oaks immense beds of ferns rare and endangered plants chids 30 springs of water and a boiling mud pot About one mile of walkways was built by the students of the school system in one day as a project Courthouse needs tree County Judge K P Bryant met with Marshall Reeves Fred Beene John Billy master Sewell According to Postmaster Sewell customers can be more assured that their gifts will arrive in good condition if the following packaging tips are followed A single item in a package should be cushioned with shredded paper excelsior compressed tissue paper cloth or expanded plastic foam If two or more items are in the same carton cushioning material should protect items from contact with each other and each item should have its own individual inner carton Fiberboard containers in- large soap cereal boxes etc larger than the gift being mailed should be cut down to about the size of the gift to minimize shifting of contents in transit However breakable items should have at least one inch clearance between the sides of the by hunter CORRIGAN A deer hunter found a body six miles north of here about one quarter mile off S Highway 59 Friday night Sheriff Joe Nettles reported Nettles said the body was found by the hunter buried 16 inches into the ground hunter contacted Polk County Deputy Sheriff Kenneth Acker who called in fellow officers Nettles said Tuesday the body was a woman about 28 years of age The body was taken by Polk County officers to the Harris County morgue in lobby and decorated for Christmas -Ed Lepley county agent said the tree could be 10 feet to 14 feet in height and he would like to have it by Dec ASC committee election The slate of nominees for the upcoming ASC committee election has been developed The candidates in San Jacinto County are as Albert Bass Milton Hoot Arnett Jones and F Wilson Lovett The ASC committee election will be conducted by mail from Nov 25 until Dec 5 Eligible ASC voters will receive a secret ballot in the mail with instructions on how vote for candidates of their choice and return the ballot to the county office Participation in ASC elections is open to all farmers regardless of race religion sex color or national origin 6 Lepley said he would prefer a cedar tree He said the Extension Service personnel would cut the tree and haul it to the courthouse so the county 4-H members could decorate it next week Cost sharing available The Texas Forest Service would like to remind all San Jacinto County landowners
