oncoming seventies can be even more prolific During the 60s Texas greatly intensified its grams of timber velopment and increased its production of Southern Pine lumber A new Southern Pine wood industry born rapidly while production ed at a steady pace Investment in new plant equipment was extensive shared by outside interests and expanding local enterprise According to the Southern Pine Association production of Southern Pine lumber by Texas mills rose 30 percent during the This economic progress is predicated on a solid base of improving raw material supply The quarter century beginning after World War n and now coming to an end has become widely recognized as the golden of trial forestry in the South Of special significance here is the sponsored tree farms movement in- ago to encourage the practice of forestry by vate landowners On April 15 1942 the South's first tree farm was formally dedicated By De- cember 1948 only six years later Texas had 158 tree farms totaling acres later in November 1969 the state's totals increased to tree farms a- cres All signs indicate that the seventies will present new challenges and ties for Texas forest industry While housing the chief market ber has been temporarily depressed by the federal stringent fiscal policies the government it- self has set a housing goal of 26 million additional units twice the volume of house con- struction for any comparable period of the past If these goals are to be met it may be necessary to double the availability of thern and plywood by 1978 of Pine lumber and plywood Texas would be in the forefront of this de- velopment Also a 100 percent In- crease in Southern pulpwood production is projected by 1985 The South currently provides three of the nation's pulp and paper products Of course Texas will have to further increase the supply of timber in its forest to meet these new lities While the 60s ed miracles of forestry these were largely on industrially held lands which represent only 20 percent of total re in the state Most timberland in Texas belongs to private owners While nearly of Texas 11 eleven lion are in- vested with well-managed tree farms there is great room for improvement in the remaining 60 percent mostly in small ownerships Creation of the necessary incentives and assistance for thousands of small owners is Thomas Bonds New Parents Mr and Mrs Christmas Party At The Bob Brown's Twas a few days before Christmas and all over spring Terrace Children were stirring because Chip had a party for some of his friends at his new home with Bob and Ruby Brown Not only were they stirring but roasting ners and and popping corn and soda pop caps Weird lights and weird sounds from the record er kept some from spinning the bottle Oh well on into the night Some of the noise makers were Debbie Lou Atkins gy and Kenny Newman David and Susan Jackson Ann Graw Kathy Currie Cheryl Patrick Victoria Yiager Frank Phillips Luke Reynolds Jr Ruby Linda Rose Lavone Hudman Joy Wilcox Joe fey Vicki Winfrey Jan dan and Jeanene McMurray CHRISTMAS 1969 The celebration of Christmas takes on added meaning each year It reminds us that material cess holds little value if we neglect the spiritual The strongest tie in human endeavor is that of the family and through this tie we project our good wishes and feelings to those around us Some of us express the holiday in material ways through an exchange of gifts others through an exchange of cards personal visits or telephone calls But they all focus on the main theme of brotherly love It is the time of year when good-fellowship in spite of some commercial overtones becomes con- friendly kind thoughts and actions are directed toward our It is a time when voices are heard in song and the cares of the world melt Let us try to extend the quality of the Merry Christmas of Christmas Day to the other 364 days in the looking for positive ways to further the well-being of all mankind Sales On Saturday January 10 Shepherd voters will be asked to go to the polls and decide whether the City of Shepherd shall levy a one percent sales and use tax Voters in 431 other Texas cities have already approved such municipal sales tax programs and some of the early ones have already started to realize the fruits of the one per cent levy The need for additional municipal income is clear cut There are many places new city income is needed Primarily street improvement is the most obvious Of course there are other places additional money can be placed but the critical need for present streets and drainage is readily apparent Tax on land and real property via the ad valorem tax route is the old and established way of rasing money for city improvements however when a chance comes along to legally raise funds for the city coffers from a different source the San Jacinto County believes it should be taken It is quite apparent that ad taxes will for a long time in the future be the main source of local tax revenues This newspaper believes the one percent city sales tax is one means of raising money that will at the same time give the hard pressed property owner some tance in footing the city's steadily increasing price tag for progress Fourteen Texas cities those who got their laws passed in time to take effect during the first quarter of 1968 found that their sales tax brought in as much as times more revenue than anticipated This type of broad base revenue can not be over looked by a city such as Shepherd which must certainly face its most difficult financing and growth problems in the im- mediate future
