heavy prop erty damage From Texas northeasterly a wide belt was drenched last night and to day and a tornado swept the Coosa river valley from Alabama across northwest Georgia arid into North Carolina dipping at widely separated V points Hailstorms and high winds were reported from various points The tornado at Ala near Anniston demolished a negro church used as a school building killed three of the pupils and injured ten others two seriously One of those killed John Henry Lee was found half a mile from the church and died a short time later in a hos pital Twister Next Strikes Town s Two miles East of v The twister next struck at Max wellborn Ala two miles east of Mer i and damaged a number of houses but no one was injured nor Continuing northeasterly the twister dipped at Ga three houses and the Southern Railway station and in jured five persons none seriously The tornado struck again two i miles west of Calhoun Ga turned p school building crowded with chil dren around but none was injured In that vicinity three houses were demolished The storm next struck In the vi of Wilson N C where many farm buildings were blown down JL trees uprooted power and transmis sion lines and Police By WILLIAM P WASHINGTON March 22 President today issued a proclamation declaring the immigra tion quotas as defined in the na tional origins act to become effec tive July 1 He did so with a dramatic and frank statement that while he was opposed to the national origins plan arid disliked the duty of issuing the the president must be the first to obey the law At the same time it was intimated that congress at the extra session may take action to either repeal the act or to postpone the date of the op pending further study The presidents statement in con with the proclamation fol lows The attorney general lias advised me that in failure of congress to sus pend action it is now mandatory upon me under the immigration act to issue the proclamation establish ing national origins as the basis of immigration quotas The proclama March 22 Federal prohibition agents customs officials and local police were warned by the treasury department today that they must henceforth adopt a policy where diplomatic liquor accompanied by an accredited attache of an embassy is being transported The treasury confirmed the issu ance of instructions to the proper au settling the question of explosion which shattered the mine yesterday mounted slowly today and mine officials announced at least fortyone men had been killed Sixteen others are missing and it is feared their bodies may be
