session took front rank among the ablest statesmen and debaters of the land and today friend and foe alike concede to him the leadership of his party m that body His labors are net confined to the Senate He is an ac tive member of several important com and during Congressional vaca tions he is always actively in the political canvasses of the various otates Some idea of the prodigious labor performed by Morton may be Fathered from the though he is so crip pled as to be unable to stand while ST e has addressed the people ot Indiana m 62 counties since the last adjournment of Congress and has spoken to at least hearers face to face What may seem strange to many Morton has never in any public ad dress made the slightest allusion to the private character of a political oppo nent He has adopted the true view that while the public life and acts of men holding and seeking high official positions are proper subjects of is wrong to descend to person al detractions This is all the more singular from the fact that no public manor the nation has been so bitterly P befouled with the slime of filthy as ho No man who has heard or read his speeches need bo told that this forbearance on his part is not for any lack of ability to pun ish the rascals who have presumed so long on his patience His in this particular is dictated by a lofty con ception of the obligations of dignified statesmanship and is a convincing proof of the strength of his character Ho is yet young between fortyfive and hay years of age but there is no man m one life who has done more for the honor and
