volume Ko 14 Wednesday April 3 1991 NHS Annual Ball Game Held Meyer 1st Team State By Joy Heller Loren Meyer has added another honor to his already long list of athletic accomplishments Meyer a senior at Community School was named to the Class A Boy's Basketball 1st Team by the Des Moines Sunday Register Meyer along with Fred of Ames and Hurl Beechum of Des Moines North have all been recruited by Iowa Slate University at Ames where they will begin in the fall Meyer is a repeat as a Class A pick as he was named on last year's team Loren averaged 40 points as well as 15 rebounds during the regular season He had a 60 point District Tournament game when the Ram's played Clay Everly Loren will be playing in the Dr Pepper All-Star series to be played at the in Cedar Falls The series is sponsored by the Iowa Basketball Coaches Association They have selected 60 12 coaches to participate in this year's games The ten member teams are divided into North and South squads in Class 3 A 2 A and 1 A- A divisions The three games will be played June 8 Meyer was named to the North team Troy Larson of Mallard is the only other Palo Alto County athlete who will be participating in this series Meyer is the son of Jackie and Mike Meyer of Ruthven The National Honor Society held their third annual benefit ball game at the R-A Gym on Monday March 25 Mr John Fokken advisor of the NHS Our NHS kids worked with Principal Erv Rowlands in setting up the games and event I feel good about working with this calibur of kids they are top notch kids Mr Fokken explained that in order to be inducted into the National Honor Society a student must maintain a 3.25 grade point average or above and possess skills in Leadership Character Service and Scholarship Students are eligible for induction after the first semester of their year They are selected by a committee comprised of faculty members Present members of the National Honor Society are Mike Hermanson son of Andy and Elaine Hermanson Kathy daughter of Jerry and Irene Corey Ruehle son of Denise RuchleY Jenny Olson daughter of Greg and Mary Olson Angie Mason daughter of Donna Mason Todd Miner son of Kelly Miner Heather Brown daughter of and Connie and Chris Mannes son of Mrs Linda In the opening game of the National Honor Society Ball game the members of the RA Girl's Basketball team took on members of the faculty Some of the of the faculty were Larry Bomber Bollman Whiz Winkelhorst Andy Cagey Gazette Erv Romping Rowlands Lisa Crash Crandell Jon Jumping and Dave Magic Marks In the opening minutes of the game the faculty team was all geared up to show their stuff Referees Bob Sundall and Kelly Miner were both a little slow on the whistles as quite a few fouls went uncalled Dave Magic Marks canned a that brought a loud cheer of applause from the crowd Bahama Papa was pretty proud of that one thinking that looked pretty easy gave his all at range but he failed to connect There was a lot of floor action in this game as several people ended up there in their quest to win the game However the were just too tough and in too good of shape physically to get beaten by final score was Girls 41 Faculty 36 Between the ball games there was a Hot Shot contest with numerous students taking part in this event The second game pitted the Rams against the The referees in this game were much more alert and could blow their whistles much faster than the two in the first game Whistle blowers for this game were Marie Miller and Sandra Storer Some of the Dads team members were Bob Pops Petit Mike Mighty Meyer Steve Zany Ron Whamming Williamson Bob Stormin Sundall and Kelly Movin Miner This group was really out for the kill but you knew the Rams were not going to let this group beat them The DADS brought the ball up the floor with great finesse passing the ball around and missing alot of made some of them too It was hard to tell who won this contest because the scores on the board went up so fast All in all it was a fun night and the spectators had a lot of laughs watching these good sports perform for the good of the National Honor Society The National Honor Society has some of the very best students in a school in their membership Those students are members should be proud of affiliation with the NHS Pictures of the game are on the RAMpage xv v j W Tom Parks Kent District Rep is shown and Phyllis Son of Nelson Farm Supply in Ruthven with a Savings Bond for placing 19th out of 155 entries in the a Kent Dealership Display Contest Mike and Dee was their winning entry Nelson Farm Contest By Joy Heller In February Kent Feeds Inc ran a display contest for all of their dealers Each Kent Dealer was to build two displays of Kent Products in their store then send a color photograph to judging Nelson Farm Supply in Ruthven built their displays around Ike and Mike They Supply Wins v received word from Muscatine that they had placed nineteenth which entitled them to a savings bond There were 155 entries and prizes were awarded to the first twenty places Congratulations Nelson Farm Supply on a job well Henry Feldman resident at the Ruthven Care Center celebrated his Birthday on March 24 Shown with Henry above arc his special friends and fellow members of the Ruthven Post 33 who spent the afternoon visiting with Henry at his Open House Pictured from left to right m front and Frank Coleman two of the oldest members of the Post along with Ed Nelson who was not present for the picture back row left to right Hub Campney Lawrence Rice Ray Geelan Robert Fieseler and Leonard It was a special day for Henry Don't forget your help is needed on Saturday April 6 at the RA Community School playground Preparations will be made for the coming of the new playground equipment Volunteers are needed Spring Don't forget to set your clock ahead when you go to bed on Saturday night April The time changes back to daylight sayings which means you have to SPRING If you don't the legend has it that you will be one hour late for the next 6 months
