Trustees of State Colleges and Universities Jones the second president of GSU since It was founded in 1901 will end 50 years Jones To Retire Half-century Of GSU Service To End Dr Jones association with the school the last 40 years as president He succeeded Grambling founder Charles P Adams to the presidency in 1936 after first coming to the school in 1926 tenure Grambling grew from a tiny struggling two-year training school with a handful of teachers and a few poverty-stricken students to an internationally known university with an annual budget of almost million In 1926 Adams brought Prez to the school which consisted of five or six tered white wooden buildings He was assigned responsibilities as math teacher physics teacher chemistry teacher band and choir director baseball coach registrar and dean of men Born on Aug 5 1905 in Lake Jones received his degree from Southern University and in 1932 he was awarded a master of arts degree from New York's Columbia University Immediately after graduating from Southern he began his teaching career at Lampion College in Alexandria where he remained for one year before coming to Grambling One of the high points of his long career came in 1970 when he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree from Tech He has addressed the United Nations had an audience with the queen of Iran and one one of his most memorable trips journeyed to Africa for the inauguration of the Liberian president He described his proudest moment as being when the U.S Louisiana and Grambling State University flags were hoisted in Liberia Grambling received word this morning it had been grant tinder Title I of the Public Works Capital Development and ment Act of 1976 according to Mayor Woodard the money used for street improvement projects He said the grant was announced by telegram this morning from J arid Russell B Long and Rep Jerry Huckaby Woodard said he has been working on the grant for several months and said the street work would get underway within 90 days He said projects to will include rebuilding of Wayside Street and overlaying several other streets Gas Company Buys Leases Texas Gas Transmission Co has chased natural gas leases on 72 tracts of land totaling about 200 acres in Lincoln and Claiborne parishes according to records in the Lincoln Parish Clerk of Court's office The purchases were made from years as head coach of the Tigers He's the only col 1 ege president who also coaches Under the guidance of bling teams have captured Southwestern Athletic Conference championships and NAIA and NCAA honors The school has long been regarded as one of the nation's leading collegiate baseball Dr Jones has coached such future professional players as Ralph Garr Matthew Alexander Jimmy Jackson Tommy Agee and Reggie Baldwin He has been a friend of opposing coaches players and fans and of the many professional scouts who have journeyed to Grambling in search of diamond talent During the past distribution system for the Wesley Chapel Water System Inc has been completed climaxing some 14 years of efforts to obtain a rural water system for the area The system which will serve 115 meters initially includes a water well a ground storage tank and 15 miles of distribution line was financed by a loan from the Farmers Home Administration and a FHA grant The loan was closed on the project on May 14 1976 according to FHA representative Smith of Farmerville North Central Utilities of West Monroe was contracted for work on the system at a cost of while the contract for the water well was Orpheus by president Mil Nu Chapter of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia a professional music fraternity at Louisiana The presentation was made just seconds before the concert of the New Orleans Symphony orchestra under the auspices of the The award came as a complete surprise and left Gilbert speechless at least for a few seconds When he he told the audience that normally a music man doesn't receive recognition as such because the music as such is his reward in itself Gilbert a native of El Dorado Ark received his in Economics from Tech and his degree in Music Education the American Con- of Music in Chicago and his M in Music from Northwestern University in Evanston Illinois He was a member of the Louisiana Tech Collegians and Tech Symphony played in Army Bands during World War with bands in will open tomorrow and run through noon next Thursday With longtime incumbents having already announced they will not seek reelection this year both Grambling and Dubach will be electing new mayors in the primary election set for April 2 Also to be chosen in the election will be town council members and chiefs of police Robert M Enloe will end 32 years as mayor of Dubach when a new mayor takes office on July 1 Woodard the only mayor in history is calling it quits after 24 years as first a part-time and later a time mayor He has attributed his decision to step down to failing health Both men have been instrumental in the growth of their respective communities Enloe first ran and was elected to the Dubach town council in 1941 Four years he ran successfully for mayor and has held Minden C
