The scene was bedlam in Chatham County District Court on the first court day of the month The prosecutor rapidly calls out defen dants names Failure to answer means the defendant isnt there Defense and lawyers Doors open and close constantly Then Judge Alonzo Coleman takes the bench prompting some Hispanic defen dants to sit a bit straighten They know this judge can conduct court in Spanish Coleman tried to organize Spanish classes for other judges but problems stood in the way The state hasnt found money to pay for the lessons and ques tions have raised about whether judges should function as interpreters Coleman said the training is needed to serve the estimated 205000 Spanish speaking residents of North Carolina when they come to court The Administrative Office of the Courts is exploring with the state community col lege system a way to get judges into low cost Spanish classes said Alan Briggs assistant director The push came largely because of Colemans enthusiasm for the language and his polling of other judges on the need Were beginning to see it as a growing necessity Briggs said Its a realistic change in North Carolinas demography In some parts of the state I would say its becoming a very significant problem in our courts Please see SYSTEM page
