Richard Nixon responded Wednesday for the first time in five months to direct questions about the scandal that has shaken his presidency I shall not resign Nixon said And in the latest of his at tempts to put Watergate behind him he declared it is time to get on with the business of the people Polls show Nixons prior statements and speeches of Wa tergate innocence were vincing to many So the same city school district so that their Critically Burned In Plane Crash By PAUL RECER AP Aerospace Writer GALVESTON Tex AP Former astronaut Fred W Haise Jr has suffered critical burns in the crash of a World War II training plane during a landing attempt here Haise 39 was admitted to a Galveston hospital Doctors said he had second degree burns over 50 per cent of his body with patches of third de Partly cloudy skies are forecast for this with fair predicted for tonight Partly cloudy conditions are expected to prevail again on Friday with a chance of afternoon or evening thundershowers Winds and exhibit World War aircraft It was painted to resemble a Japanese torpedo attack fighter Haise was ferrying the air plane from Angleton Airport southwest of Galveston to an airport in this island city In his only space flight Haise was the lunar module pilot on the Apollo 13 moon mission in 1970 Haise resigned the astronaut corps earlier this year and was named a technical assistant in the school lines was permitted under certain conditions Students from other districts were per mitted to attend Lumberton City Schools if a tuition fee was paid This fee was to balance the tax which Lumberton residents pay for the support of schools MOVES BARRED Then the Department of Health Education and Welfare banned the crossing of school district lines Children were required by law to attend buses are starting to roll in Robeson and County School Superintendent Young Allen has renewed his annual plea for driver safety Through Maxton St Pauls and Red Springs will be having some school traffic this week the primary affect will come next week when all 248 school buses venture forth for the opening of the new school year in the county Lumberton and Fairmont as well Allen urges drivers to view the big yellow buses as a rolling caution sign and asks that distances of 100 feet on open road and 50 feet in business districts by maintained behind the buses One of the most dangerous times law practice in New York Rogers 60 was the only re maining member of President Nixons initial Cabinet He said he never intended to stay past the first term but remained an additional seven months to help nail down the ceasefire in Viet nam and to fulfill other diplo matic missions I would have left whether there had been a Watergate or not he told reporters At a news conference in San Clemente Calif President Nix on announced Rogers resigna tion and said he is nominating Kissinger to replace him If confirmed by the Senate Kissinger a bach elor who admires movie ac tresses and other Accorded Strong Support By President SAN CLEMENTE Calif AP President Nixon has declared his continued strong support of Vice President Spiro T Agnew and has personally asked the Justice Department to investigate news leaks about a criminal investigation in which Agnew is involved Nixons request for an inves was relayed to Atty Gen Elliot L Richardson on Wednesday by White House Chief of Staff Alexander Haig said a Justice Department spokesman in Washington The spokesman John Hush en added that Richardson would take every reasonable step to plug the leaks At a news conference here Wednesday Nixon said he wel the chance to respond to reports that he no longer fully now that the vice president is involved in a Baltimore grand jury probe of alleged kickbacks and political corruption I want to set the record straight Nixon told newsmen in his first personal public statement on Agnews legal troubles I had confidence in the integrity of the vice dent when I selected him as vice confidence in his integrity has not been shaken In fact it has been strengthened by his courageous conduct and his ability Nixon said he felt it improper to comment on specific allega tions against Agnew because Robesonian Staff Writer Republicans held a at the Holiday Inn North Wed night to celebrate the switchover of Avery Nye of Lumberton former vice president of the US Jaycees to the Republican Party The Republicans apparently have high hopes for Nye who at 33 looks every inch the part of a successful candidate and who admits he is thinking about running for office on either the state or U S levels He is expected to carry weight with the young middleclass population and may have some impact statewide as former president of the North Carolina Jaycees Gene Anderson special assistant to Gov Jim Holshouser described the political move as part of a conscious hard push to go after the most promising young men in North Carolina to attract the young leaders of our state to our party Nye a Democrat since first registering to vote officially switched his party affiliation Wednesday afternoon and three party men were on night to as Anderson put it be there when Avery Included were George Little deputy secretary of the Dept of Natural and Economic Resources and David Jones secretary of Social Rehabilitation Control At the reception Nye hosted about 25 Republicans and a few borderline cases and said he switched parties to work toward a system in Robeson and North Carolina With a system the most qualified man would get elected all the time Nye said The way registration is now a lot of people vote party line without caring about the can We need to work toward equal Republican registration He displays confidence that a system can be achieved in Robeson saying that many people who are dissatisfied with the Democrats have never been asked to switch Anderson regards Nyes changeover as proof to the state that Republicans are going to play the competition game in building for the future rather than accepting the current Republican administration as a deal In a brief speech to those at tending the reception Anderson said Nye means more to Robeson County the Seventh District and the state than anyone whos switched over in a long time Fore years this county has been reputed to be one of the most counties in the state Anderson siad It took guts for Nye to become Republican He
