N C TUESDAY OCTOBER 10 1961 Fund Raisers Given Important Task Scouting Develops Leaders For The World Of Tomorrow French said this morning at a KickOff Breakfast at the First Baptist church opening the Lumberton Boy Scout campaign A goal of has been set tc provide money for the em ployment of a fulltime executive to help Scouting leaders and to work for development and im provement of the Scouting prog ram in the Central district The leaders with Dr Douglas Clark as chairman of the Boy Scout campaign plan a whirl wind drive slated to end next Monday to raise the money just as quickly as possible The meeting this morning was followed by a meeting of women workers headed by Mrs D E Ward also at the First Baptist church Following the Boy Scout by a group of Scouts who assisted in serving breakfast Rev Robert J Snell gave the in vocation Berry French ting for Hector MacLean deliv ered the keynote talk of the mee ting calling Scouting one of the finest things that had ever hap to people He defined Scouting as an organization of adults working for the benefit of It was noted that five million Scouts are now participa ting and that in the 51 years of 33 its history there have been million in Scouting ranks Stressing that Scouting devel ops leaders Mr French noted that of the seven astronauts in training for space flights five are products of Scouting the only one of the four which does not have a fulltime execu tive Failure to have a fulltime executive is attributed to lack of funds Dr Clark stressed that is needed to put over a healthy and progressing prog ram of Scouting in the district Tom Burgess area worker from Atlanta Ga showed a film on Sell Scouting The film illustrated ways of sell ing Scouting as a desirable and worthwhile program planned to help the most important portion of any community Its young people Scouting is not reaching all who want it because of lack of funds In Lumberton there are waiting lists and only one in ten potential Scouts is reached Bob Dubose also from the of fice in Atlanta Ga spoke on the organization of Scouting He mentioned in particular the im portance of local Councils such as the Cape Fear Such councils band together several counties in order to have a better prog ram Money raised by such fund raising movements as the pres ent one stays in the Council and works for the good of the Coun cil and the district Leaders in the drive include Dr Clark chairman Preston Douglas preparatory services Horace Stacy soliciting Danny Dr Clark presiding at the Shaver publicity Wilson Black meeting announced assistant county agricultural agent said this mor The Lumberton Market sold approximately 1657000 pounds more than last year and the to tal crop sold for million dol lars more than last year The Fairmont Market sold over 300000 more pounds than last year and the total crop sold for approximately than laA year Both markets in Robeson sold about 2 million pounds than last year and the total revenue was approximately 5 million dol J Jars more than last We attribute the large in crease in sales on the Lumber ton market to the excellent crop in the northern part of the coun ty Perkins continued The ar eas around St Pauls Parkton Rex and Shannon produced the best and largest crop of all time When the official fi gures are in we expect a yield of approximately 2100 pounds per acre If our predictions run true to form then Robeson will have the highest yield in history and will probably be the highest of any county in North Carolina This will be a five year period with an increase
