watchword of the sette republicans is Butler must go Butler reduced the expenses of the state and showed up the wrongs of Tewkaberry and on this account he is said lo have disgraced his state Gov HAMILTON may be beaten by Onr for the republican nom for bnt he will not step aside without an effort The blonde governor is nobody's fool when it comes to setting op the pins THE presidential beo is buzzing pretty loud in Senator Logan's hat The blood of the swarthy senator is uot ai bine as that of Arthur but he would as good a president as he He has at least one accomplished wife TIIA New York WorM The boom started in Chicago for Phil Sheridan for president has died out completely It has leaked out in way that if Phillip is elected to the presidency he will employ his brother Mike to write his messages and attend to the literary features of his administration This has settled him MR AVEHY permanent chairman of the Massachusetts dem stuto convention closed his address delivered on assuming the duties of presiding officer with the following critique of the republican When reduced to plain English and stripped of needless verbiage this republican platform might have been condensed into Our only belief is in cohesive powers of official onr mortal fear is Gov therefore we would carry bark tha administration to those happy days when the were ill lad by good republicans and or malfeasance was either condoned or concealed From this and other evils God save the commonwealth of THE New York Sun lican managers and newspapers make piteous appeals from time to time of the voters of their party They im- them to go to the primaries and see that proper nominations are made They entreat them to turn out on election day and save the dear old party from destruction They complain that republicans seem so averse to taking part in active polit work and so indifferent to the general breaking up which threatens the party So far as upon the great and increasing mass of republican is concerned these appeals are likely to be wasted The more intelligent and thoughtful are sick of going to primaries where proceedings aud nominations are by a set of men who make politics their business and a business They are ashamed of porting candidates iu whose election they had no voice and of whose un- IHness in too many cases they are convinced They have net only their prejudices but their honest more than cno election They have been betrayed by a strain ed sense of party fealty into casting votes for candidates whom they know to be unworthy More than once after a show of opposition they have played into tha hands of the party managers They have learned by bitter to distrust and despise most of the so-called leaders of their party Many of these dissatisfied voters have become perfectly indifferent to its fortunes and have determined not to vote at all until some great and now hardly possible change shall convert it from a party der into a party of principles Many others on whom party allegiance sits more lightly have resolved to vote with the democrats either permanent ly or until the republican party for- sakes its evil ways The absence of the one class and the presence of the at the polls last fall helped to give the can party a severe and deserved ishment It shows as yet bnt the faintest signs of recovering from the effects of that punishment The re- publican voters who struck it dowr show no perceptible signs of ance The organs and the managers may remonstrate and supplicate bnt the republicans will remain deaf to their appeals The hordes of ere professional politicians are about the only republicans who are still deeply interested in republican success It is a matter of bread and butter with them A large number of voters especially in the country where political are slowly made and slowly cast off still cling to republicanism from force of habit and old associations trembling ae yet lo go to the side whither their consciences are beginning io point them But where are the republi cans who were republicans from founded conviction and who cleave to that party from their admiration of what it is and not of what it There would be no need of calling on voters to do their politi cal if the party still had greal principals at stake and great public ends in view as it otice had In ita better days it filled its adherents with earnest enthusiasm and faith There was not one indifferent voter in il then Every man in it thoroughly believed in it because it had a defl ite object and had proposed to itself a work It grew into power be cause it believed in itself Never did a party sink from ness toward a more disgraceful end It now no principles no tions no honesty It advocates no legislation by which the public inter ests may be benefited It stands on nothing which touches the popular heart It sits shamelessly with one hand in the public till and with the other points with pride to the ords of the few years in which it was undishonored and upon that record asks to be allowed to keep on stealing Its voters can find in it as it exists to day nothing to inspire enthusiasm or even respect Its work was done long ago It can succeed longer on false pretenses Its time has come FROM Ann a Portion of thp lij tho resilience of tho bride's parents 343 North Water street on iv evening 27 ISM by T Mr T game I am That on the 12th day of June 1880 a gentleman and my self caught a two bushel sack full of nice bass in two hours time out of the eter was six degrees below zero there are five of these large springs on Piney In the months of November De- cember and January fish are in great abundance in the Gasconade river and plenty can be caught there in any month during the year The Black bass is the best and gamiest fish here and strange to say we have the genuine Lake Huron species of them with dark tiger spots and the red rings in eyes We have also the bass or pond variety which have dark backs and stripes sides and white bellies The croppy is found in these springs but not so plenty The wall eyed pike or Jack salmon are caught here that weigh eleven pounds I do not believe that they resort to salt water as some of this kind do in other states All the Reef family are found here and the bine or channel eat fish together with the perch and suckers sire among the liveliest fish Crocker is a central point from which tho best portions of the river is reached beginning two miles below this place and as far as twenty-five miles down this beautiful stream when there you nre but six miles from the railroad Now if you go forty miles down the river you can go to Jerome on the railway but there the river is so rapid that boats can not be rowed back About two years ago a gentleman came here from Fulton county he j went about twenty-five miles north of here and killed fourteen deer and plenty of and caught a great fish Mr W E Wheeler in 1879 killed forty seven deer during that fall The town of Waynesville is ten miles from Crocker with three stores in it and each on an age bought one deer every day for a month in 1880 Mr Dave Wilkinson says that he could take and place four men upon stands where he will insure them a deer every morning I went out sixteen miles last De- cember and with rod and hook caught 111 black bass in one day caught forty-five in one hour by actual time Come up and see me if you are up the road soon Yours Truly JAMES M Parties desiring to rusticate iu this of abundant game and fish will find Col Craddock a reliable source of
