Reno Evening Gazette (Newspaper) - May 2, 1898, Reno, Nevada 01 RENO WASHOE COUNTY MONDAY MAY 2 1898 NO 27 United States Squadron and Annihilates the Spanish Fleet in the LISBON May The Asiatic squadron of the United States Commodore commanding yesterday engaged and completely defeated the Asiatic squadron of Spain in the harbor of Manila in the Islands Commodore Montijo commanding the Spanish fleet lost three of his largest vessels His flagship the ored cruiser Marie Reina Christina and the cruiser Castilla were burned and the cruiser Don Juan de Austria was blown up Several other Spanish vessels were badly damaged Two brisk engagements were fought In the first the Spanish vessels were seriously damaged but not fatally The American vessels then began to for position The Spanish believed that they were ing and great excitement followed The first shell from the Baltimore struck the Marie Christina and set her afire Efforts were made to quench the flames but in vain When it became evident that she must burn and that there was danger of her powder magazines exploding Admiral Montijo left ship transferring his flag to the cruiser Isle de Cuba Just as the Admiral left the vessel another bomb struck on the deck of the Marie Christina killing Captain and wounding several marines A well directed shot reached the iron cruiser Don Juan de Austria a vessel of tons A terrific ex- plosion followed and the ship was blown up The ing up of the Don Juan de Austria was attended by a great loss of life among the crew her commander also being killed All the time the American ships were under way their maneuvering being intended to the manship of the Spanish gunners less effective The cruiser Castilla next to the the largest and most powerful in the Spanish squadron was also burned The Spanish cruisers Don Antonio de Ulloa and the Mindanao were also badly damaged in the encounter That the American squadron received severe damage in the encounter cannot be doubted Early reports had it that five of Commodore Dewey's fleet had been sunk Later advices from Madrid put the number at two There were undoubtedly heavy losses of men on both sides One apparently trustworthy report states that the Spanish had over two hundred killed and four hundred Trustworthy details of the American loss of life will hardly be obtainable until Dewey has taken Manila or has sent a vessel dispatches to Hongkong All the news thus fur comes from Spanish sources but it seems evident that has not captured Manila or he would now inve control of the cable Unless he is able to make another and capture the town he will be in an awkward position having no base upon which to retire and MADRID Spanish Admiral edges that the fleet has been completely demolished The American fleet is now blockading Manila and a bom is expected to take place to-day The British Consul at Manila had a conference with Commodore Dewey It is believed that the first authentic news will come through British sources as all Consuls have been instructed to notify the home government of the condition of affairs Great discontent prevails at Madrid and tial law will be proclaimed if any hostile demonstrations are made LONDON May of the demolition of the Spanish fleet by Commodore Dewey has been officially confirmed and the bombardment of Manila commenced to-day for a surrender of guns does and the possession of the cable offices not having been complied with by the Spanish authorities has commenced and will be continued until Manila is a pile of ashes or the treacherous Spaniard is brought to his knees SPANISH SEND A FLAG OF TRUCE WASHINGTON May President and Cabinet have received information that the Spanish General of the Islands has sent a flag of truce to Commodore Dewey This act is not kuow wheiker it was canned by abrasion by in con contact with the or whether it was the disease known as scab Now the intention of the sheepmen of wan knowing there was lame number of sheep shipped over from California which were liable to be diseased and the disease being very contagions to appoint a practical as a inspector who would be thoroughly familiar with the disease in all iU stages without the assistance of a veterinary surgeon or members of the Board of Health the fee of to be paid by the owner of the sheep inspected at tbe rate of half a cent per bead Now this is a good thing fur Nevada sheepmen Tor if there are among them some who are so negli as to dipping their sheep it ia tbe duty of the scab inspector to take them to a corral dip them and if necessary sell
