Harriet Miers was the same girl he remembered from Hillcrest High School until he heard the news of her nomi nation to the Supreme Court I didnt put the two er until last week Mr Peters said He remembered the stu dious tennis playing Harriet from high school but throughout the years as her career as a lawyer head of the State Bar of Texas and White House legal counsel brought her in the public spotlight Mr Peters never realized the memory and the newsmaker were one in the same It is not unbelievable that he didnt make the connec tion For many Preston Hollow residents Harriet Miers has been a friend and a neighbor for many years For Mr Peters she was a pretty girl from high school who rolled in a different crowd ior so I know who she was she was pretty enough to know her name remem bered Mr Peters who gradu ated in 1962 a year before Miers I know she was a stu dious person certainly not a person youd expect to go out and raise hell like the rest of us were At Hillcrest Harriet Miers may not have been out paint ing the town red but she was anything but idle According to her high school yearbook Ms Miers spent four years on the honor roll was a member and secre tary of the National Honor SERVE AND VOLLEY While at Hillcrest Supreme Court nominee Harriet Miers was captain of the tennis team The president thinks she will show similar agility when facing senators questions about her judicial views Society and the Latin National Honor Society spent two years on the Student Council was elected senior class treasurer received a National Merit Scholarship Letter of Commendation and took Honors Courses for her four years at Hillcrest But Ms Miers wasnt a bookworm Around in Sports her senior year Miers was die captain of the tennis team and was the assistant sports editor of the Hurricane student newspaper The quote chosen to accompany Ms Miers photo in the 1963 Hillcrest yearbook sounds very familiar to many of the accolades the Supreme Court nominee has loved It was in the morning and Katrina crouched in the distance ready to pounce In those hours Ms Bate and her husband Bert fled the storm and left behind all the things of their lives including thriving careers in theater and headed off into uncertainty She ended up in Preston Hollow and soon found that she had brought more than her pets with her to Dallas Within a week the habit of her With Wright Brothers Plane Smithsonian acquires invention from North Dallas restaurant owner By Taylor Clary Contributing Writer Mariano Martinez never thought serving up Mexican food would earn him a spot in American history Mr Martinez was just looking for a way to take the pressure off his bar tenders at his restau rant in 1971 when he rigged a soft serve ice cream machine and invent ed the frozen margarita His invention not only saved Marianos it introduced an American cocktail classic In September the Smithsonian acquired Mr Martinezs original mar garita machine and the preparing the machine for display and planning a margarita party to cel its installation The lifelong Lakewood resident ventured into the restaurant world 34 years ago with in his pocket and an SBA loan His demand and his frustrated bartenders were threatening to quit Mr Martinez saw his business in trouble I saw my dream of being some body evaporating and crumpling he said I had a sleepless night The next morning a stop at the local provided a needed moment of inspiration As Martinez poured his morning coffee he noticed some children pouring And thats when the light came on he recalled With a unnecessary service By Peter Simek Staff Writer Burglar alarms have not led to any arrests according to Productivity and Innovation Commissioner Larry Davis which is one reason why city staff say that the proposed Verified Alarm Response program that will reduce Dallas police response to burglar alarms is a good option for the city Burglar alarms never caught anyone Mr Davis said adding that the vast majority of alarm calls are false In the event that there is a burglar Dallas police spokesman Sen Cpl Max Geron said the average cer response time to a prior ity two or three burglar than 27 minutes Mr Davis said response time is significantly quicker for 911 and panic button calls which are considered priority one calls If the city adopts the verified alarm response he said police could cut priority one response times even further The city estimates that there are 60100 burglar alarm calls a year and only 2000 or a little more than 3 percent are real crimes The citys Verified Alarm Response program would cut police response to bur glar alarms making it the alarm responsi to send a guard to ver ify if a situation requires police assistance Las Vegas Milwaukee and Salt Lake City have adopted similar programs North Texas Alarm Association president Chris Russell said justifying cut ting response to burglar alarms because of the high rate of false alarms is bad policy divided by 365 thats five real crimes a day he said Another problem with the proposal raised by the alarm industry is the assumption by the city of Dallas that alarm companies will send security guards to tripped alarms In cities that voted yes to verified response only 20 percent of alarm compa nies go to response Mr Russell said I dont believe there are any alarm compa nies in Dallas of a cant size
