like the home of a war hero Each item book and knickknack is in its perfect place The couches are plump and firm and the floors are spotless Things look like they havent been moved for years But there is one room that looks to be used very often In a small back bedroom Ms Goforth has boxes and boxes of assorted items scarves hats coats blankets DVDs toiletries underwear the list goes on She is storing them for the nonprofit char ity she founded in 2003 US Wounded Soldiers It was a foundation that sprang out of her work as a flight attendant for American Airlines When the war in Iraq began Ms Goforth started accompanying troops on their way to the Middle East There are lots of different airlines that are committed to the government during wartime she said I flew the troop trans ports to Saigon during Vietnam So its basi STAIT IMOTO WAR HERO Flight Attendant Teresa Goforth turned a routine flight to Frankfurt into a nationally known charity for wounded US troops I was over there like every single week she said And I was saying what do you need Were here all the time What can I bring you from the States At first the soldiers requested simple things like extra blankets batteries CDs But as wounded soldiers who had been evacuated from Iraq were brought to Landstuhl the hospi tals needs became greater When they are airlifted from the battle field they have nothing on Ms Goforth said Basically they arrive no bags they dont have toiletries underwear socks T shirts all the basics Ms Goforth took it on herself to start bringing those items to the soldiers I was flying the charters all the time and as I was flying I would get donations all the time she said When we would make a trip I would box it up and carry it on the plane five boxes 10 boxes 12 boxes it got to be a lot of boxes Ms Goforth found that she was in a good position to get items to wounded soldiers in cally the same thing we are doing now flying Germany thanks to her job the troops into Kuwait Ms Goforth was often making trips to Germany She began to befriend a number of the sol diers who were stationed at the US military base and hospital in Landstuhl Germany Were brokers she said There is a need there and there is someone who wants to donate there and we put them together Eventually Ms Goforth began receiving Sec Council Sets Limits For Backyard Structures New ordinance to prevent pool houses from being rented out By Jessica Hoover Staff Writer The Dallas City Council approved an ordinance last week regulating the size and architecture of accessory structures or buildings adja cent to main homes The change closes loopholes under which homeowners in zoned areas were able to rent out spaces in those structures It has been a big problem in East Dallas We have a lot of accessory structures through out the city such as pool hous es and cabanas in and guest houses and things like that Councilwoman Veletta Forysthe Lill said They were larger than the main structure they were incompatible and it created a lack of predictability in the neighborhood character and made it difficult for our staff to enforce the existing code The number of accessory structures has increased in recent years Theresa ODonnell city director of development said the main trouble comes when homeowners build separate game rooms or guest bed rooms that end up housing another family City ordinances allow only family members nannies or friends to stay in the separate spaces But Ms ODonnell cited an example in East Dallas where one home zoned had four families living in accessory structures on the property at one time People who buy a home in a neighborhood have every right to expect that there is only one family living next to them she said adding that having multiple families in such a concentrated location is unsafe and causes parking congestion Under the new regulations the floor area of an accessory structure cant exceed 25 per cent of the square footage of the main home The floor area of all extra buildings on the property cant exceed 50 per cent of the floor area of the main home The height of the additional structure cant exceed the height of the home and the roofing roof pitch and foun dation must be similar in color materials pattern quality shape size and slope among other characteristics To some degree it has to conform to the architectural character of the main struc ture Ms Lill said The ordinances are an over lay to historic and planned development district codes People who buy a home in a neighborhood have every right to expect that there is only one family living next to them W Theresa ODonnell City director of development and dont interfere with those regulations and also dont apply to structures that are 200 square feet or less Before presenting their new code to the city council the planning department tested their rules against structures around the city We found that for people that are legally permitting their buildings they have any problems but the ordinance will provide us with the tools we need to go after those illegal conver sions Ms ODonnell said Under the code any structure that is a dwelling unit or an area that has one or more kitchens bathrooms and bedrooms or enough to accommodate one family would require board approval Homeowners who violate the ordinance could face a maximum fine Longtime Franklin Middle has made moms happy and children succeed By Peter Simek Staff Writer After more than 25 years of teaching math at Franklin Middle School Janet Scott is set to retire after this year Although parents regret to see Ms Scott leave the public school they cant help but express gratitude for the years Ms Scott has spent at Franklin has exceptional teach ing skills She keeps kids inter ested and excited about math said Peaches who had her son transferred into Franklin in order to study with Ms Scott It is hard to quanti fy what a young teen sees and feels about an adult And yet parents agree that it is exactly Ms Scotts rare abundance of that quality the ability to bridge the gap between teacher and student in a way that is comfortable exciting encouraging and pro that makes her exceptional H believe there is a teacher who has had as much of an influence in our sons life Ms Scott humbly downplays her abilities I dont think Im unique at all she said I dont think Im special Im just someone who WEATHER loves the subject whos tried to love math as much as I can She admits however that there may be one thing about her that is unique I think Im kind of crazy she said You have to be a lit tle bit crazy to be a teacher for this long Ms Scott has been involved with Franklin for even longer than she has taught there The Preston Hollow native was a Sec SCOTT on to lii Partly Cloudy Partly
