The Paris News (Newspaper) - May 24, 1985, Paris, Texas IDA The 24 1M3 friend emigrates VIENNA Austria AP Irina Kristi a Soviet peace activist and friend of dissident physicist Andrei Sakharov arrived today with her husband and son on a flight from Moscow after unexpectedly being allowed to emigrate Mrs Kristi 47 said she had been trying to leave the Soviet Union for several years She was accom by her husband Sergei Genkin 51 and their son Grigory 3 She said they hoped to settle in the United States but that they had made no final decision Mrs Kristi speaking through a friend who acted as an interpreter told reporters she last saw Sakharov last year in the city of Gorky Sakharov who won the 1975 Nobel Peace Prize for his human rights activities has been in Gorky in internal exile since 1980 Mrs Kristi said she had seen letters from Sakharov and his wife Yelena Bonner which were sent to friends in Moscow I have the impression that he is in despair and ready to do anything that a man in despair can she said Sakharov is buried alive in Gorky without any Mrs Kristi said that she did not think Sakharov was now on a hunger strike It had been rumored in Moscow and the West that he had undertaken a fast in an attempt to get permission for his wife to travel abroad for treatment of an eye ailment However citing letters and telegrams from Mrs Bonner to friends Mrs Kristi said real grounds to believe that on the 16th of April Sakharov was on hunger he was taken to the hospital on the 21st and and I have reasons to believe that he was on hunger strike at least un til the third of May but I think that at the moment he is not F believe that in the middle of May he abandoned his hunger she said She said that in recent cor respondence Mrs Bonner had stressed that the couple was in good condition It was a big con trast from letters in April which were very very Mrs Kristi said The friend Lubarsky said Mrs Kristi had been under surveillance by the KGB secret police since the 1960s because of her peace activities Both Mrs Kristi and her husband are mathematicians but she lost her job in 19fi8 and has since ing as a private tutor Authorities summoned Mrs Kristi last week and said the family would be allowed to emigrate said Lubarsky Mrs Kristi showed reporters a photocopy of a message she said was in Mrs Bonners handwriting congratulating the family on get ting permission to emigrate It was dated May are very happy for you We wish good luck to you your hus band and your the message said Mrs Kristi saw Sakharov in Gorky about a year ago when he was on hunger officials left Moscow after two days of talks with Soviet negotiators about grain purchases throughout the rest of 1985 but no agreements were reached during annual session a Embassy official said today The American delegation led by the deputy undersecretary of agriculture Tom Kay departed Moscow Thursday night without gaining a clear understanding of how much grain the Soviets will need to
