   OrrViews (Newspaper) - June 5, 2009, Orrville, Ohio                                 Submitted by JULIA DOYLE Orrville Relay for Life Members of the Orrville and surrounding communities are encouraged to take part in the 2009 Orrville Area Relay for Life June 12- 13. Opening ceremony will start at Orrville High School stadium at 6 p. m. The Luminaria ceremony will take place at 10 p. m. or dusk with the closing celebration the following morning at 11. Appearances will be made from DifferentDirections, Good WillBand, D o w n Force, Bagpipers Dan Lutz, Zach Ault, Heidi Herr, and Gretchen Smith. Bass drummer Jeff Edwards and Snare drummer Ashley Ault and Conner Smith will also be in attendance. After the bands, the following contests, events and games will take place: Ms. Relay Hula Hoop, Scavenger Hunt, Midnight Snack, Tricycle Races, Relay Poker, Raf fl e Laps, Game Show Mania, Watermelon Seed Spitting Contest, Frozen T- Shirt contest and a Leftover Loot Auction at the end. Relay For Life is an 18 hour event that helps raise money for cancer patients and their families to provide medical and emotional support during one of the most dif fi cult times in their lives. Submitted by DARLENE MORRISON Three Orrville teachers will be retiring at the end of this school year with a combined 98 ½ years of teaching in Orrville City Schools. They are Lakalynn Armold, 37 ½ years; Jim Mankins, 26 years; and Diane Shanklin, with 35 years. Lakalynn Arnold is retiring as a special education ( intervention specialist) teacher. She began her career in 1970, working at Maple Street and North ( now the former Junior High building). She graduated from Northwestern High School and grew up in West Salem. Arnold said she grew up in a home having a mother as a school teacher. Now her two daughters, Lisa and Lori are following in their mother’s footsteps, teaching. Lakalynn graduated from Kent State University and is married to William Arnold. In 1970 she took a maternity leave to stay home to care for their young daughters. Ice Cream Social In honor of its 100th anniversary, Smith Dairy invites the community to an ice cream social on Friday, June 19 from 2 to 8 p. m. at the corporate of fi ces located at 1381 Dairy Lane. There will be fun for everyone including: games, entertainment, displays, prizes, and of course, cake and ice cream! Notably, the company is welcoming friends and families throughout the area to a good old- fashioned “ lce Cream Social” in June, which happens to be National Dairy Month. Local communities have always been dear to the heart of Smith Dairy. These days, approximately 200 farms within just 50 miles supply milk to the company’s processing facility here. Smith Dairy employs more than 350 people locally and about 500 total, including those at its other locations in Ohio and Indiana. Each day, our facilities process about 150,000 gallons of milk and 4,800 pounds of cottage cheese, sour cream and dips. In a year, Smith Dairy makes as many as 4.5 million gallons of Smith’s and Ruggles ice cream. Now one of the 70 largest dairy processing companies in the U.
