some Glenwood disappointing for but for most it was simply Business was probably the spottiest and most erratic of any of my years in said one I was just able to hold my own in reflected Most merchants said high interest rates and decreased sales were the primary reasons for their mediocre Some said it was difficult to add the high interest rates to the price of merchandise and still keep prices Others said interest rates prevented them from expanding their inventory or adding on to who listed decreased sales as the reason for their had various explanations for Some said it was because the grain embargo imposed hardship on farmers in was imposed on Some said it was because of general economic everyone is tightening their belts and cutting back where they One said theres a vicious circle causing decreased sales in The merchant said people are shopping in Council Bluffs and Omaha because of a lack of selection But because theres no room on the its impossible to improve the Glenwood is in real trouble business wise because it is built on a and at least half of the square is occupied by businesses or this merchant The minute you go off the square youre in trouble because theres no place to If some of the utility would move off the maybe some of these new businesses wouldnt be closing Other reasons sited for 1980 being a fair year were high utility increased wholesale high gasoline prices and high employee Utilities were a big but we aint seen nothing said one Gasoline prices for our service trucks are at an said In an effort to we sometimes must wait until we accumulate several calls in a given At our service charges prices Im not sure we are breaking Of the three merchants who said they had a two attributed it to their cautious My business was more profitable in 1980 than in any year because tight controls were kept on all expenses in anticipation of reduced sales and high interest said The third merchant who had a good year said it was because sales were up and expenses were relatively unchanged from The two businesses that had below average years blamed decreased Business was worse than anytime in the last four years including 1974 which was almost said one of those mer Sales were down almost 63 About 71i percent of the of them people who had fair or bad the last year forced them to be more We put better business management into practice and ran a tighter said echoing the experience of I didnt hire a salesman although I needed and I put in more effective hours We all sharpened up our sales technique and product We worked harder and we worked I have been unable to give my employees the raises in salary they said as a result of the interest we are unable to stock some of the Other merchants told of having to keep a close eye on having to borrow money and having to increase delivery One advertised and three said they had more sales in 1980 than 1979 in hopes of selling more I had more sales because people were looking for a explained one Only one merchant mentioned having fewer sales during 1980 than but added that 1980s were bigger Three merchants said they didnt notice any particular buying trends in but 11 said they More than anything merchants said their customers primarily bought and often opted for higher I noticed a lot of practical buying less said A lot of customers seem to be wanting quality merchandise and maybe arent as conscious of price with expectations the merchandise will last longer and in the end be added A few merchants said they noticed customers buying a little at a time instead of all at Two said that people waited until the last minute to dp Christmas and one negated the vicious circle theory mentioned That merchant said people are shopping in Glenwood instead of going to Council Bluffs and Omaha because you dont save the amount of gas it takes to get Two 18 pages 25 cents Time for renewals Iowa motor vehicle licenses should be renewed no later than Saturday
