Olney Enterprise (Newspaper) - March 25, 1982, Olney, Texas 0 4 ONLY NEWS AND ADVERTISING MEDIA VOLUME NUMBER SEVENTY SECD 408020 THE OLNEY TEXAS ENTERPRISE MARCH 1982 12 PENN POINT Like a lot of other well meaning government that more often than overstep their original purpose or come up with expensive studies that show little if anything the Environmental Protection Agency EPA now says that cows are one of the main causes of air Its no The EPA study released recently says that cows beef and dairy cattle produce millions of tons of hydrocarbons each It is hydrocarbons that causes problems with the ozone layer between the planet earth and the It is hydrocarbons that the EPA has worked to eliminate by making industry clean up their smoke auto manufacturers to install catalytic and cities to stop burning waste and go to burying It would appear that the EPA has one of three choices to solve this latest bon they could order all cows killed and make owning a cow they could order that all cows must be housed in barns equipped with air purifiers so that the hydro carbons would be taken out of the air before it is put in the they could order the beef and dairy industries to develop a hydrocarbon free model by a certain 0 Laugh if you but it is well within the realm of possibility if the EPA is permitted to rule as they have in the they threatened several industries with closing if they did not install very expensive equipment to eliminate Many factories had to be closed because they simply could not afford the necessary The paper industry lost 15 small paper mills because of this ruling and if you remember back in there was a paper shortage and when the shortage was the prices of paper had almost the EPA required that industry purify all Emissions from emissions from manufactur ing before those were let loose in the this was a costly item and in most the construction of a series of chambers and screens to clean up smoke and Some firms had to close down because they could not afford the the EPA set specific dates and mileage require ments on the auto industry in an attempt to both clean up the emissions given off by vehicles and to also save The auto industry responded by trying to meet the but say that the cost of each auto was increased by well over because of the These costs were passed on to the the auto industry is in trouble because of the price tag on the vehicles plus current high interest We are not saying that all the EPA requirements were because many of them were It is to say that the cow may be come extinct as we know in an attempt to cut down on hydro 0 This reminds of the story told by Abe recently fired as the head basketball coach of the University of Lemons is a much sought after speaker known for his wit and He tells the story about how his father took him on the train up to Fort Sill to see the herd of buffalo in the Contineud on Back Page Annual Relays Set Saturday State
