largest Snake on Earth 0000 OF MUSIC REAL STREET FAIR OELWEIN JULY 15 Harry Lukens Hippodrome of Wild West Dog and Pony Circus and Midway Oelwein is going to have a real street fair from July 15 to 20 inclusive It will be under the auspices of the K P Band which has contracted for one of the largest shows on the road the Bros Hippodrome At the meeting of the city council Monday permission was granted for the band to play the aggregation so that for a week Oelwein will have enter galore The Hippodrome is now playing Marshalltown and judging by the papers of that city it is making a hit It is said to be clean hiah class moral and entertaining The features are the Wild West the Dog and Pony Circus the Trained Wild Beast Show and free band con certs each afternoon and evening hv the purchasing muzzles tags etc to bring the animals within the pale of the law Over in the First ward there is a neighborhood dog a big shaggy good natured rellow whom the boys like The bovs read the proclamation evidently held a council of war The result was that they chipped in and bought a muzzle for the dog Saturday evening they hailed Marshal Hockings and asked him kow much the tax on a dog amounts to They were informed that it is for a male aud for a female canine Well said the spokesman of the gang our dog is a he one and we will pay his tax cause we dont want him shot And then they began to dig up small coins in the shape of pennies nickles and two or three dimes till the dollar was counted out and a receipt given for the tax There are good and bad canines and the boys are lawyers office The other day a man came to an wein attorneys office HEARD aud cussed his wife in IN LAWYERS seven different OFFICE because she plans to leave Oelwein and accept employment in a hotel of a neighboring city About five minutes after he had blow ed off and zone the mans wife came in and stated that she did not propose to live with the booze fighter any longer and requested the attorney to draw up a petition for a divorce And there you have it Of course we give no names as we presume that we had no business to be around and hear the roundup The woman in the case figured that EVE Fred Houghs Bay Mare Taken by Unknown Party From Second Ave S About 9 p m WAS A MIGHTY BOLD STUNT Sheriff Culver Came Down Sunday Morning and is Making Sys Search A bold stunt of horse stealing ed in Oelwein Saturday evening when seine unknown party took Fred Houghs rig from where it was hitch ed near the Citizens lumber Co office and skipped outi for parts unknown Mr Houghs son had driven in from the farm to spend the evening driving in a bay mare hitched to a buggy nearly as good as new He hitched the rig at a rack on First Avenue touth and when he went after the rig at about 9 80 it had vanished into thin air He notified toe authorities and Mr Hough came in and swore out a war runt against John Doe or some other sun of a gun charging him wth steal ing a horse and buggy Sheriff Culver was wired and came down Sunday The wires bave been kept hot in all directions but up to the time of this writing no definite clue has been obtained of the thief Of course it is not known whether the rig was taken to sell for gain or whether it was taken as a means of free con In the meantime Mr Hough is out a good driving mare harness and buggy It may become necessary to reorganize the thief society in this neck if such stunts are going to be pulled off However we prophesy that Sheriff Culver will run the thief to earth for he has a first class record as a thief catcher SUDDEN SUMMONS OF FRANK W PITT Oelwein citizens were shocked Tues day morning to learn that little Frank W Pitt son of Will 3 Pitt had died at the family residence at Tues day morning totally ed as the little boy had not been seriously ill up to the evening before Friday afternoon in company with other boys he enjoyed an outing in the timber and with the ethers ate wild gooseberries and waded in the creek Saturday he was somewhat ill his stomach affected Sunday he dressed himself and was apparently improving rapidly Monday he to feel worse aud it oclock it was realized that he was in a critical condition All that medical science could lish was done for the little fellow but he drifted into insensibility and fell into the dreamless sleep shortly after one oclock Frank W Pitt was born October 6 1897 and was therefore about nine years and nine mouths of age He was a bright little rellow and a favorite with friends and playmates The lust services occur from the residence at 102 North Frederick street Wednesday afternoon at 3 oclock The sympathy of many friend go out to the bereaved family LAST SERVICES FOR The lust services for Joseph Gallagher were held from toe residence at 502 First East at Tuesday morning aud from Sacred Heart church at 10 oclock There was a large attendance of sympathizing friends and a large from the A O U W of which he was a member Rev P S OConner con ducted the
