Oelwein Register (Newspaper) - March 20, 1907, Oelwein, Iowa VOL 34 FAYETTE COUNTY IOWA WEDNESDAY MARCH 20 1907 Established in 1680 OUR NEW SHOE DEPARTMENT Including all grades of Shoes Rubbers etc from the cheapest to the very finest grades for men women and children is now OPEN FOR BUSINESS Mr D T Corkery the best known shoeman in northeastern Iowa has charge of this department and will be pleased to meet all his old friends and customers as well as the friends and that the prices and quality of goods we carry will surely make for this department One Week From Sunday Is Easter i i Are you ready for Easter with a New Suit Hat etc We are prepared to show you the correct styles for spring and summer You know the length of the lapel the width of a collar the drape of a coat are some of the apparently very small things that determine the style of your suit We will show you and explain the changes in style When you buy your suit from us you know you art buying a suit that is correct for style quality and you pay no more than you would foi ordinary sort you please and t is provoking to be unable to obtain workmen at u time when needed But it is u good SIKH just the same for if the city was dead here would be a number of workmen ployed The writer recently attended a bas ket ball game between two mens teams and was struck by the difference in WERE costume of two IN teams The oi one ATTIRE team wore a costume some what similar to that of a base ball team minus the pads The other team was attired in what is presumed to be the professional garb To the best of our recollection the boys wore on the body a garment that somewhat an article of female apparel advertised as a corset cover while the limbs to the knee were covered by a garment similar to those sold to ladies They apparently wore no undercloth ing We presume this is the proper caper but it struck us that the team who were dressed in male attire made a better appearance and by the way won the game It was rather a mean trick that was played on sundry of the young lady clerks in a South Fred FED EM stick street dry goods YEAST CAKES night Knowing tha the girls have a strong liking for sweetmeats a party with malice aforethought offered them wha purported to be delicious candy The Sirls greedily partook of the supposed taffy only to find that it was sed yeast cake There was much ex and the friendship tha has existed for months was broken i a minute It is suggested that th girls have been late in rising in the morning and it was thought the yeas might assist them Copyright 190807 by Chaa Kaufman ft Bro Chicago EASTER The Spring Apparel wants of Mankind are in full flower at Easter Time and our Store blossoms in sympathy Now as to your Clothes If the reputation crossed last week and stated that this paper WHS to CHRONICLE be sold under the DEVIL mer when it meant STOGAS The Oelwein Daily We called attention to the error and suggested that it might be well for them to correct the error and send the office stogas Wed mornings mail brought the stogas for the devil together with souvenir postal on which appears an Indian smoking the pipe of peace with the words We send the pipe of peace by mail Smoke Dodge Chronicle The card and the stogas are accepted in the same kindly spirit with which they w re peace and good fellowship again float serene ly over the two offices All right boys I This is tbe d et town I was ever in So spoke a party who has with in the year OELWEIN moved to and A BUSY engaged in The exclamation was not in consequence of j dislike of the city but because it is sometimes to secure anyone to do a job of carpentering painting papering etc The reason is not far to see Almost everyone in the city is busy is leading the us life if Friday aud Saturday were the great days of the feast of millinery openings in Ladies of our acquaintance were THE noticed standing in front of certain mil OPENINGS linery emporiums as if hypnotized by tbe dreams of spring head gear displayed The writer noticed one lady acquaintance who gazed into a window on East street for five minutes by the watch She was under the hypnotic spell of a hat Millinery openings have the same attractions for the fair sex that a boss trot or a carnival has for the sterner sex As one lady remarked Easter comes so early this year that I am in doubt whether to forego the Easter parade and buy my spring hat later or join the procession Candidate Must Receive Thirtyfive Cent of Party Vote to be Nominated Par For Six and twothirds acres of laud a house barn and chick en house one and threequarters miles northwest of postoffice at Register office S The was am by the Monday afternoon so that instead of requiring only a plu to nominate no candidate can receive a nomination without getting 85 per cent of the party vote The amendment was made after a lone morning debate Senator Dunham of Delaware coun ty introduced the majority primary amendment and immediately Senator introduced a substitute to make it necessary to have 35 per cent of the party Vote to gain a tion Speaking followed in which Sen ators Dunham Bleakely Jamison of Clarke Jones of Mills and others took a very active rart The vote on the substitute Friday afternoon was 82 to 15 in favor first class painting and paper Hanging call on Wm Lewis 107 4tb Ave North All work guaranteed or 10 pay I HIS WEEK GOODS IOWA THE ECONOMY DRY GOODS CENTER EASTER TIDE SALES AND SPRING SHOWING OF EVERY THING IN DRY GOODS AND WEARING APPAREL ASSORT MENTS ARE BEST AT THIS TIME AND WE DESIRE YOUR INSPECTION PENALTY FOR In my opinion the primary law should contain a clause makine it ob on every voter to attend the primary and exercise the franchise failure to do so to be punishable with a stringent fine So spoke a young business man of the city the other day He said that it is a shame that an American citizen should not take enough interest to participate in the selection of candi dates and vote at the elections A leading farmer was in The Regi ster office the other day and com on the difficulty experienced n getting the farmers to quit work ong enough to so to a caucus or pri mary or to vote at the election Said I am in our town hip and last fall I spent several days riving through the township alline on voters and urging to et out to tbe polls When election ime came less than onehalf of the voters It seems that with biennial elections less interest is tak en than when elections were held yearly the suggestion of imposing a penalty for nonvoting would be good idea It is an axiom that a man who does net take interest enough to cast his vote is not doing his part in conducting the government of this fact he is not a first class citizen in all respects If he wont vote of his own free will and accord he should be obliged to do so Queer isnt itv Over in Russia the people are braving death to get an op to vote while in this coun try there are plenty of men who wiV not take from fifteen minutes to an hour once or twice in two yenrs to go to an election Monday March 25 is election day and what are you going to do about it Are you going to be too slothful to assist in getting th right men into office are you go to pass up the election and nut in your time kicking for the next year We want it distinctly understood tha we have no sympathy for a man does not get into the political game aud do he can for cood govern ment THE SCHOOL BOARD MET MONDAY NIGHT At the meeting of the board of edu cation Monday night T L Hanson was reelected assured that Mr will be of much interest The great national game is begin mug to bo talked up right smart and the diamond will soon be occupi ed by the rival nines while the root ers and fans will do valiant service of yore It is probable that will put a fine ttam into the field the coming souson The legislators of South Dakota havo given the cnt of all to divorces Hereafter those who wisti to destroy the tie that binds must reside in that commonwealth one entire year instead of six months as heretofore Possibly it will moie business for the hotels DONT FORGET That the best place in the
