R Burns f With a revised lineup the Oelwein smiths Drop Forgers and Helpers were to the team easily defeated Tripoli in Games Etc Were Interesting Ander almost cloudless skies the temperature just correct the Labor Day celebration in the Hub City under the direction of the Central Labor Union and was a start to finish Beginning in the morning with the parade and concluding with the big picnic with speeches arid games at Oelwein City Park in the afternoon and the band concert and dance at night it was an ideal first September in every way As the speaker of the day Editor M W Martin of the Blacksmiths Journal remarked it was a peaceful celebration in on hit Red Learn was far removed from the stress and strife of the steel nicked for thirteen blows but had an cities two fast games Sunday and Monday The first game was featured by the heavy hitting of Risk Mattern and Happe Two runs were scored in the third on Risks single and Finchs hit accounted for another a moment later In the sixth with Deal on base Risk slammed the ball to the right field fence for a homerun With the bases full in the eighth Mattern hit one on a line to for three bases and scored a minute la Order of the Procession The procession was one of the best ever seen in the City There were two bands that assisted the boys to keep in step Heading the first division was Marshal Chas FKai ser and a large American flag carried by member of the Cen tral Labor Union Following were the the Central Labor Un ion officers and delegates first band speaker and mayor car men and machinists and their helpers and help ers Next the Waterloo band followed by railway clerks switchmen sheet workers molders carpenters electri cal workers blacksmiths and helpers There were elaborate floats representing the carmen ma sheet metalworkers and blacksmiths and the active business of the crafts was represented in ac tion on some of the floats They were given applause by the large crowds the streets through which the proces ended at the Rock Island park where a kiddy pie eating contest was staged on theband stand where also the Waterloo baud a fine concert The picnic dinner at the City Park from 1130 a m till 1 p 1m was an enjoyable feature of the dayand the groups at lunch in various parts of the park under the had a good time trees evidently The platform speaking was presid ed over by George Wright as chair man who acted in that capacity most happily He introduced Mayor Jep son who gave the address of wel come which was most hearty He referred to some things which must be changed emphasizing the evils of profiteering where the raw product is selling for way and the fin ished product way up referring to wheat and flour hides and shoes wool and clothing and glaring in stances Editor M W of the Inter national Brotherhood of Blacksmiths Drop Forgers and Helpers Journal was introduced by Chairman Wright and spoke for an hour holding the close attention of the large crowd and making telling hits on the steel trust as exemplified ty the contests and various industrial cen ters He said we know of the stress and strain of the industrial war in Oelwein He complimented the Hub City for its clean streets pretty lawns neat and attractive homes the civic pride that pre vails also the labor unions on the splendid the encouraging showing each organization made He in The Register in an early issue as it is not possible t0 put it into type today He made a very favorable impression as a man qualified to speak for labor Following the address there was a wrestling match between Casey McCarron and Mitchell with Art Miller as referee This ended in a victory for McCarron as follows The first session was won by McCarron in nine minutes with hold the second was Mitchells the fall coming in five minutes with a head and bar arm the third was taken by McCarron in four minutes with a full head scissors and bar arm The horseshoe pitching event was won by Fred R Ross and J W Saun dry who put it over the other con The horseshoe club has wired for Jackson the world horse shoe champ to play in Oelwein at the Fall Farm Festival September 2930 The other were pulled off according to schedule and afforded an interesting diversion for the crowd The ball game played at the ball park was won easily by Oelwein over Tripoli and the story is told in another column The band concert in the evening by Passed Away iu Oelwein Sept 3 1920 R McKenna was born in Minneapolis Minn May 6 1888 the daughter of Mr and Mrs John Mc Kenna The family moved to Oelwein in March 1898 She graduated from the Oelwein school in the class of 1906 iShe taught In the schools of Fay ette and Buchanan counties for sev eral and June 16 1909 she was united in marriage to August A Gehrke To this union six children were born two dying in infancy Following an of three weeks Mrs Gehrke passed away at the home of her parents September 3 1920 services were held from the Sacred Heart church Mon day forenoon and interment followed in thecity cemetery She leaves to mourn their loss her husband and four en Marie 8 years John Joseph 7 years James Francis 4 years and Paul Albert seven weeks also her father mother and two B of Los Angeles Calif and Harry F of this city She was a kind Christian wife and mother and many friends in this city which has been her home for years express condolence to the bereaved family AB R H
