noon and 8 p.m daily Lions Club issues Union Bridge directories The Union Bridge Lions Club has produced a new directory for the town Dedicated to the Lions CLub International program the directory offers more than ISO listings with contractors stores churches organizations schools and businesses These directories can be found in several locations around Union Bridge or may be requested by ing 410 The Lions Clubs International Foundation has undertaken a sive effort with Campaign to eliminate preventable blindness worldwide Working with the World Health Organization Lions around the world will be attacking the problems of cataracts in thousands of people in countries where health facilities and doctors are lacking Already clinics are being built to fulfill this need River Blindness is a disease causing loss of sight in many children that can be helped by a simple pill and concentrated spraying of certain areas Lions will help with the dis- of the pills and organizing the spraying efforts Other children go blind as a result of malnutrition yet can be spared this malady with proper doses of vitamins which Lions can ter In this country hundreds of people lose their sight through ignorance of the damage diabetes and glaucoma can do Lions everywhere will con- duct educational campaigns to alert people to these dangers and to help them realize the value of regular eye checkups Because 80 percent of the world's blindness is preventable Lions are proud to live up to the Knights of the Blind title Helen Keller once gave them by joining in this effort to needless loss of sight Each Lions Club approaches this worldwide effort in different ways Individual Lions Club members are making personal donations Many clubs have some rather creative ways of raising other funds The Union Bridge directory project combined a need for such an mation source with the charitable inclination of local organizations businesses professions and farms The club took it upon itself to absorb the cost of publishing the directory offering free listings for all directory participants Unless a business specifically asked that they not be listed all were included so the directory would be as complete as possible Bringing in the tory shares information about the project and directory participants were offered the opportunity to make contributions to prevent blindness Community support was enthusiastic and nearly was given by directory participants Meanwhile personal donations by Lions CLub members more than matched those from the business community so a total of more than has already been pledged or contributed toward this cause The people of the Union Bridge area have been very supportive of this campaign In turn the Union Bridge Lions have paid for eye examinations and glasses for many needy children They maintain a supply of hospital beds wheelchairs walkers canes bedside commodes and even hoists that can lift a patient to or from his bed for use by anyone in the community who may have a need This service is free of charge The club organizes a Red Cross blood drive in July and again in January to give people of this area the opportunity to donate blood on a regular basis The New Windsor Lions Club has blood drives in March and October so anyone can donate blood four times a year without traveling far from home The Union Bridge Lions Club col- used eye glasses which are checked graded and shipped to developing countries or to areas of this country where the need is great It also financially supports Leader Dogs for the Blind the Maryland Eye Bank and the
