National Children's Dental Health Week next month the Newport Naval Regional Dental Center will begin a comprehensive dependent Preventive Dentistry Program on Monday February 2 This free service will be provided to all eligible dependent children from ages 5 through 18 AH dependent children of both active duty and retired personnel on both sides of Narragansett Bay are eligible Appointments will be proximately one hour long and will consist of an audio-visual First women arrive as NAPS goes coed Two Navy enlisted women were enrolled at Newport's Naval Academy Preparatory School NAPS Monday for the first time in the school's history They are Yeoman Third Class Amber L Hernandez 20 of Chicago 111 who reported to Newport from her previous duty station at the Naval Surface Force U.S Pacific in Coronado Calif and Seaman Apprentice Janice Buxbaum 19 of Baldwin who reported from Corry Station Naval Technical Training Center Pensacola Fla At least one more enrollee is expected to report to NAPS within the next few days Both Midshipman Candidates Hernandez and Buxbaum have been accepted as midshipman candidates at the Naval Academy and will be competing for appointment to the Academy in June if they complete their half year of training at NAPS The present NAPS class also includes 332 males Graduation exercises for the group is scheduled May 19 Midshipman candidates Hernandez and Buxbaum will be berthed on the first deck of Nimitz Hall the same building where the other NAPS students are berthed and will wear the standard Navy uniform for enlisted women In addition they will undergo practically the same type of training as the male students The only varsity and intramural sports they will not be eligible to in are the contact sport football lacrosse and wrestling The policy governing ad- of women to NAPS and the Naval Academy stems from a recent Congressional ruling opening all the service academic to women next fall The ruling also has the support of President Ford All military and civilian personnel have been invited to attend the observances of the annual National Prayer Breakfast in the Recreation Center's Seaview Lounge and cafeteria next Thursday Jani 29 at 8 The local Prayer Breakfast is timed to coincide with a fast held simultaneously in Washington sponsored by the U.S Senate and House prayer groups Local civilian clergy and dignitaries have been invited to attend as guests of the Naval War College The program will feature a commentary by Colonel Robertson deputy to the War College president and Chief of Staff and taped messages from the secretaries of defense and Navy Tickets priced at per person went on sale early this week at the three open messes Officers CPO and Tickets will be available from command representatives and also will be sold at the Recreation Center building 656 All commands have been urged to encourage officer enlisted and civilian personnel to participate in the breakfast Civil service employes and military presentation on the causes of dental disease proper methods of staining plaque flossing and brushing care of young children's teeth and nutritional control All children will then receive an X-ray examination to determine if any dental disease or abnormality exists Children will then receive a thorough prophylaxis Cleaning to remove all calculus and plaque and their teeth will be strengthened with a topical fluoride solution Instruction also will be given to each patient on a one-to-one basis by Continued on Page 7 Wives Clubs plan auction All the Navy wives clubs in the Newport area enlisted officer active and retired have joined together once more to sponsor an annual raising event for charity This year an auction will beheld with proceeds again being divided among military and local civilian charities Last year's Fun Fair on Armed Forces Day was a huge success in both fun and proceeds All told was raised and donated to various worthy organizations Because of the many bicentennial activities ahead the wives decided to sponsor an auction earlier in the year The auction will be held Saturday Feb 28 in NUSC Building 80 just inside Gate 17 Donations are needed Both military and civilian friends of the navy have been asked to search their homes for pictures lamps small appliances bicycles toys craftwork or anything else saleable except Services also will be off Suggestions of cake decorating for a year weekend babysitting the cooking of a gourmet meal or the sewing of a colonial costume have been offered Articles to be donated may be dropped off at the following Bldg next to the EENT Bldg at the Naval Regional Medical Center any weekday between 9 and 11 or 1 and 3 p.m Navy Recruiting Office 15 Long Wharf between 8 and 6 p.m or Saturdays between 8 and noon On Saturday Jan 31 there be two more drop-off Quarters A Naval War College or 2 Jackson Road Fort Adam's Mrs John Ekelund man and Mrs Robert Connely and Mrs William Bohannan asst co-chairmen
