Newark Daily Advocate (Newspaper) - August 29, 1885, Newark, Ohio NEWARK DAILY VOLUME III SATURDAY AUGUST 29 1885 NUMBER 20 THE FIRST GUN A RINGING ADDRESS TO THE OHIO DEMOCRACY From the State Executive Com- The Democratic State Executive Com- hag prepared the following circular which will be sent to the several county organizations in the State To THE OP OHIO We enter upon the campaign under the most circumstances We are in possession of both national and State administrations and the affairs of each are being safely and wisely conducted The record of President Cleveland has justified the hopes of his friends and disappointed the predictions of his enemies A few months of public ice has demonstrated that his administra- tion is to be one of conscience and courage Many abuses have been corrected and essary reforms inaugurated Corruption fostered under rule has been exposed and large reductions in ex- penditures have been made in nearly every branch of the public service The favorites who possessed the Naval Department have been driven out and their illegal contracts obtained by indirect means have been set aside Millions of acres of the public domain which had been inclosed by grabbers have been reclaimed and this vast territory secured to actual settlers Finally all sectional animosity has ended and complete harmony restored between the North and the South The record of Governor Hoadly is equally to be commended His tration has brought credit to himself and strength to his party All the departments of State and its numerous institutions have been carefully and honestly managed The interests of capital and labor have been alike protected He has concealed his views upon no public question and his position upon every issue before the people has been clearly and fearlessly announced The business men of the country of all parties have confidence in both our Federal and domestic Administrations and in con- sequence business is again reviving and property increasing in value Our recent convention was marked with the greatest harmony There were no tions and no dissensions The ticket had already been substantially selected by the people and was ratified by the convention by acclamation The indorsement given to President Cleveland Governor Hoadly and their work was honest and earnest We owe it to ourselves to see that we give them an equally enthusiastic indorsement at the polls The cause of Democracy and good depends on this contest We can not afford to allow our faithful and ent Governor to suffer defeat at the hands of the political enemies of the Democratic party His cause is the cause of our party His success or defeat is the success or de- feat of that party for whose supremacy we have contended for many years It is our fight and will be our victory The is a short one Our State and local committees are already pushing forward the work of thorough organization We appeal to every Democrat in the State to unite with us in carrying forward the good work If we receive the earnest support at the hands of our friends which we ask and expect we promise yon a sub- stantial victory in October T E POWELL Chairman HENRY BOHL Secretary A Serious Case WASHINGTON Aug action of the United States court at Sitka Alaska in granting a writ of habeas corpus for the de- livery of an Indian Union company caused considerable sensation in Wall street circles A reporter called upon Dr Green of the Western Union When shown a copy of the story Dr Grant That statement is perfectly absurd and there not a particle of truth in it A Plea LAWRENCE Mass Aug plea of NoD guilty of the murder of Swan occasions much surprise as he had repeatedly acknowledged the commission of the crime He doubtless COVERT PROCEDURES True as Damascus Steel Sir I annot Crush Me Without De- the of the is Not YORK Aug The Graphic M Squire la response to a question the commissioner is reported to have It is no in the inner cles that there is a combination against ma which is plotting my downfall But let them beware the falling ruin If I am to be sacrificed it will ba a crash The pillars of the county Democracy will go down with mo I understand that tho mayor and his friends and his new allias claim to have evidence enough to make trouble for me I have been told that when Mr Grace came into office he said he would his eye peeled for me I am not of surveillance and I defy their hostility The reported interview goes on as Do you include Mr Thompson among those new allies you speak Well I do say unhesitatingly that if thoy can find anything not straight and proper in my department it is a legacy from tha Thompson regime I don't propose to pull their chestnuts out of the fire and then be abused and prosecuted by the very men I have sustained and benefitted Now mark me I havo not yet set up in business for myself What other man would have gone into the same offices with my powers and op- portunities and not set up in business on hii own It seems strange that son should desert you or turn against said the Graphic representative as the torrent of ilr Squire's rhetoric pause 1 for an instant Oh nothing is strings nowa days Why Franklin told me everybody knows that I was the only man in this vast city who could be confirmed as commissioner of public works on the eve of Grace's accession to power the appointment had gone over to Grace how he would have emasculated Thompson and the county What would have become of Ogden Thompson But now he turns like an adder to try and sting his friends But as you say your record is clean of course investigation will only vindicate pursued the scribe I welcome replied tha commissioner with swelling breast and matic sweep of the arm but I dislike ert procedures I am reliably informed that Mayor Grace is organizing a squad of zens to bring ma into the supreme court un- der a provision of the amended charter With Grace to elaborate and urge the charges and with Thompson to exert an in- fluence over the courts a man has reason to apprehend unfair treatment Still I defy And where is the mutual friend Maurice B Flynn in this complication Mr True as Damascus steel came the quick reply as the commissioner made an- other emphatic gesture But I repeat they cannot crush 019 without demolishing the temple of the Philistines Samson is not time blind This interview is understood to have been written by Major Hincklay editor of the Graphic as tha result of a conversation he had with Mr Squire at the Hoffman house To a reporter in his office at the department of public works Mr Squire said that tha reported interview was wholly fictitious and that ho never entertained the sentiments at- to him It was not until he went up town for dinner however that he learned that a gentleman to whom he had talked in the cafo of the Hoffman house tha evening before was the editor of the Graphic but be still denied that to this gentleman or to any one else had he used the expressions quoted In fact Mr said it was Maj Hinckley who had remarked when the rumor that charges were to be preferred against Mr Squire was referred Well Mr Commissioner you can pull the pillars down after you You have been long enough in the department to be able to do that Lato in the evening it was stated upon an authority which should certainly be zant of all facts that Mr Squire had con- sented to resign as commissioner of public works Mayor Grace had gone to his homo at Great Neck L I late in the afternoon It was subsequently learned that Mr Squire had in fact written a resignation at a conference held a few evenings since at the residence of Dr Charles E Simmons recently appointed commissioner of ties and correction by Mayor Grace Dr Simmons represented to Mr Squire that charges were to be preferred against him particularly on the ground that he had kept men in sinecure positions and that he would unquestionably be removed Tha tion was then transferred to Mr Richard Newcomb the lawyer Mr Squire his act and it is now un- that he has finally made up his mind to notify the mayor that he recalls his resignation and that he will make a fight in defense It has been a not secret among the local Democratic leaders that for several weeks past matters have not been pleasant between Mr Squire and the two or three politicians who secured his nomination by Mayor Edson and his subsequent con- by the alderman both of which facts wero the two most g surprises in recent local political history It was at the time sufficiently well understood that Mr Squire went into office burdened with obligations to do just about what these two or three gentlemen required him to do It has been a matter of current report that before bis Mr Squire and handed to Mr Hurbert O Thompson an undated letter of resignation to be used whenever Mr Thompson thought fit to hand it in to the mayor This is a mistake Such a letter was written and signed by Mr Squire at the time but it was committed not to Mr Thompson but to a Democratic lawyer lately prominent in local politics and combinations and the chief agent in presenting Mr Squire to the notice of Mr Thompson and of Maurice B Mr Squire it will be remembered was a com- stranger in Xew York at the time of his nomination He had been somewhat conspicuous as the friend of Simmons of Boston but probably the only official function he bad ever performed in this city was to serve an injunction upon the same board of aldermen that two or three days later confirmed him as next to tho mayor the most important officer in the municipal government of Now York The fee small as it was which he received for that service was understood to have been particularly welcome at the time The purpose of the letter of resignation was twofold Obviously it might be em- ployed to secure for those for whom it was held in at which the commissioner has Lately been somewhat furors ot the tho Bat if its use was controlled by ex- Thompson it could as obviously be in to the mayor whenever in the tion of politics Mr Thompson could secure appointment to succeed Commissioner Squire This is understood to Da the ture of affairs just now and if the program is not in the meantime varied Mr Squire's resignation will be presented to Mayor Grace It will be accepted and Mr son will be appointed to the Then the question will ba whether Mr Squire's recall it will be admitted by the mayor and otherwise whether Mr cuu uib courts The mayor has now the absolute power of appointment to this and other offices the confirmatory power having been taken away from the board of aldermen the 1st of January last The ment of Mr Thompson is construed by some of the local politicians to Jbe in ibp interest of Mr Cooper for governor They point to tho alleged fact that the cause of the quarrel between the commissioner and Mr Thompson was the reinstatement by Commissioner Squire of several employees who are friends of Senator Jacobs and who had been re- moved by Deputy Commissioner Smith it ia alleged at Mr Thompson's demand AROUND THE ICEBERGS Your Corn to the Best Market THAT OLD OLD
