since 1852 50 cents on after teacher is suspended Principal Deputies will be gone by Tuesday BY SEAN BOWUN Staff Writer A sheriffs deputy patrolled Smithson Valley Middle School Thursday and Friday after a vocal opponent of the school board was suspended from teaching there Jim Maxwell an outspoken crit ic of the Comal Independent School Districts artificial turf projects was suspended with full pay Thursday Principal Carolyn Pittman would neither confirm ndr deny Maxwells suspension Im not going to go into names Im not going to answer that ques Pittman said She said there would bo no deputies patrolling the halls Tues day when students return from the Memorial Day weekend But one Comal County Sheriffs deputy was on campus Thursday and Friday and outside exit doors wore locked as a precautionary she said No threats were made and the incident did not involve students Pittman said the teacher was escorted to his vehicle Thursday after hit suspension Extra security then was put in place The teacher was put on administrative leave documents revealed more about the incident and Maxwell had a lot to say about his removal A letter to Maxwell from Assis tant Superintendent for Personnel Services Linda said suspended him with full pay pond ing an investigation for alleged mis conduct The letter directed Maxwell until further notice to remain off duty to refrain from coming School District trustees have chosen a new for the combined Mountain Valley schools Denise Kern Kern ia the assistant prin cipal at Rahe Primary School and Elementary School Before that she was a counselor in the New Braun Independent School Dia and the school tern Director Kari Hutchison wud She will oversee the com bination of the Mountain Val ley Elementary and Moun tain Valley Intermediate when the 200304 year in Kern Brenda Fielder the principal of Mountain Elementary who is retiring and Sarah Towlor the principal of Mountain Valley ate Towler applied for the Mountain Valley Schools principals job but withdrew lier name from consideration She still has a contract with the district Hutchison said The schools which are located in Sattler have a combined total enrollment of 754 students 232 students at Mountain Valley Interme diate which has and 622 stu dents at Mountain Valley Elementary prekindergarten through fourth grade Of the controversial com bining of the two schools County can collect carcasses from private property BY DYLAN Staff Writer Hauling off dead carcass es is stinky business but got to do it Now the county can officially do it without the written permis sion of a property owner Carnal County commis approved an order Thursday allowing the coun ty engineer to remove car of wild animals from private property You dont have to write up a Jotter every time you have a dead animal on you Precinct 1 Commissioner Jack Dawhon said But they will have to make the County Engineer Tom Hornseth asked ers to make the change His office has a fulltime employee who collects dead animals for disposal That employee often picks up six or seven dead deer a day and the county has hauled off as many a thou sand dead deer in a year said his depart ment also gets a couple of dozen calls about wildlife especially deer which are hit by cars and wander onto the property of county residents Tiie problem generally occurs in developed and residential ureas Weve always
