disarmament and criticism Cor his failure to Fiscal 1977 Income Up Million By BRENDAN RILEY CARSON CITY AP Nevada lawmakers calculated last spring that by July i the state would have a healthy 6 million surplus Preliminary figures released show the surplus is actually a million The preliminary General Fund figures showing the surplus as of July 1 were sent out to Nevada legislators by their Fiscal Analysis Division Assemblyman Don Mello D- Sparks chairman of the Assembly Ways and Means Committee said the surplus is extremely good It means there is no doubt Nevada is sound Mello said the revenues could mean extra pay for state workers next year but more data is needed before that can be determined The Fiscal Analysis Division said the projected General Fund as of July l was expected to be 6 A but fiscal 1977 revenue collections ran nearly million higher than expected The division also said reversions oft money budgeted but not spent last year ran more than million Other adjustments for money paid out and taken in left the state with the million surplus The preliminary figure for fiscal 1977 revenue collections was up 13 per cent from fiscal 1976 collections Gov Mike Budget Division predicted a 9.6 per cent in- crease while the lawmakers predicted a 10 i per cent increase The collections include million in sales and use taxes up 17 from fiscal 1976 That's the increase in sales and use taxes since 1970 when the take was up 179 per cent State gaming taxes accounted for 9 million an 11 6 per cent which the Fiscal Analysis Division said indicates a good recovery from a workers strike affecting Las Vegas Strip The strike in the spring of 1976 was the primary cause of a drop at that time in casino tax revenues The collections also include million in casino entertainment taxes up 15 9 per cent 4 million in liquor taxes up 8.4 per cent 1 million in property taxes up 93 per cent million in insurance taxes up 21 per cent million in county taxes up 109 per cent and million in real estate transfer taxes up a record 49 per cent Mello said the surplus may top the million mark by the time the 1979 legislative session starts Maybe can look into
