IOWA CITY are 84085 students enrolled in 51 colleges universities and junior colleges in Iowa a 153 per cent increase over 1964 a report pre pared for the Association of Io wa College Presidents showed Friday The number of new freshmen on the Iowa campuses this fall is up 203 per cent from last year to 24360 compared with 20256 in 1964 This falls combined enroll ment among members is 55 per cent greater than the 54 079 recorded just five years ago President Arland F ChristJaner president of Cor nell College said The most fundamental prob lem before each of the universi ties and colleges of Iowa relates to the quality of education in the future It is evident from the increases in enrollment at all of the institutions that a larger percentage of evergrowing high school generations wants to go to college Therefore the stu dents are here They will want and are entitled to a good edu cation Expansion of enrollments presents obvious and inherent problems attendant upon accel growth New and addi tional facilities are needed by all of the colleges although much has been in the past several years er good not be available to students unless are excellent teachers It is just here that the Iowa col leges face their greatest chal lenge The 16 public junior colleges in Iowa showed the greatest percentage of growth over last year with a 463 per cent rise Their combined enrollment at the four private junior colleges included in the report resulted from the change from 2096 stu dents a year ago to 2536 The report also noted an 11 per cent increase in private col lege and university from 31815 to 35315 The three institutions the University of Iowa Iowa State University and the State Col lege of Iowa have 36770 stu dents now compared with 32450 last fall This fall 437 percent of all college students in Iowa are on the campuses of the three state supported institutions while 42 per cent are attending the pri vate colleges and universities 109 per cent are in the
