Mountain Democrat (Newspaper) - February 2, 1924, Placerville, California VOL pr annum PLACERVILLE EL DORADO COUNTY CALIFORNIA SATURDAY FEBRUARY 2 1924 No 5 CALLING A SPADE A SPADE NO BONDS FOE FIEE HOUSE A Plain Talk on the Reorganization of the El Dorado County ber of Commerce Sometimes a newspaper feels com- to say things that it would rather leave unsaid feels like the father who whips his boy solely for the good of the boy It would seem that it ought to be unnecessary to say things at this stage of the game yet there is thing radically wrong After consultation with all the boost organizations and all who laid any claim to being able or willing to boost Placerville and El Dorado county it was decided to put on a membership drive under the auspices of the of the Uni- ted Chambers of Commerce of the Sacramento Valley and to organize a new El Dorado County Chamber of Commerce all other existing boost bodies to go out of existence upon the completion of the of the new chamber A general committee was ed with Guy E Went worth as man and C H president of the El Dorado County ment Association H E Dillinger president of the El Dorado County Chamber of and Frank E Bordwell as associates The committee met and captains and lieutenants to carry on the drive were chosen and a big get together dinner planned and ried out The dinner was a big cess and everyone seemed tic and ready to go The majors gave out membership cards to the captains and the captains passed them on to the lieutenants and the drive was on The committee desiring to raise funds with which to hire an all time secretary had decided to ask each business house in the city to sub- cribe per year and to charge per annum for memberships A few merchants signed at once for but a majority refused and thereupon the solicitors instead of adjusting matters quit and the merchants were left out having signed even a card The drive was con- and about three men kept at work until noon Wednesday of this week when the membership roll contained the names of 141 who had paid at least one quarter dues in advance and the committee to have ballots printed with the names of those who -had paid and mailed a ballot to each one The ballots mailed out contain the names of all who had signed and paid up in advance and each sub- scriber will put a cross opposite the names of fifteen whom he would like to have nominated for directors of the El Dorado County Chamber of Commerce The thirty persons re- the highest vote will be for directors After marking a cross opposite fifteen names place the ballot in the stamped envelope and mail it A careful perusal of the ballot discloses the fact that one member of the general committee and others interested In the drive have not signed membership cards The names of prominent business men who have always been members of the chamber of commerce do not appear on the ballot The names of many who demanded a reorganisation do not appear on the ballot The reorganisation plan is so eminently fair and tree of ity tor any one to play politics or there can be no ex- cuse tor persons to refrain from miming carte Under the plan adopted The Placerville Volunteer Fire department held an meeting Sunday evening at which a new fire house was discussed with City Trustees Dillinger and Quigley It was decided that a bond issue was impractical at this time and some plan whereby the city can help and the business men loan their credit until the department can pay out will be formulated and adopted N was decided to make an extra effort to stimulate interest in the Benefit Dance to be given about April 1st A ticket selling campaign will be put on and an en- deavor made to have the financial benefits be an indication of the appreciation of the ity of its efficient fire department LEGION MAKING SURVEY The percentage of crime in the United States committed by aliens will be determined by the American Legion to claims that immigration be pended over a period of five years according to word received in from National Commander John R Quinn of this State This will be undertaken by the gion Americanism commission in each state department of the ans organization A survey will be made of all courts prisons and penal institutions GEORGETOWN CASE DECIDED The litigation that occupied the time of the superior court three days
